Airberlin serves up free currywurst on German Unity Day

Passengers flying Airberlin domestically within Germany today will receive a free serve of the nation’s favourite snack – currywurst – on all flights departing after 12:30pm local time.

Sourced from the Sansibar Restaurant on Germany’s Sylt island, the airline expects to serve up around 6,000 currywurst portions to hungry passengers travelling at the start of the long weekend (pictured), which would normally cost €6,90 from the on-board menu.

Currywurst is typically a German fast food dish of pork sausage, which Airberlin cuts into slices and seasons with curry ketchup. Passengers can then add curry powder to their liking.

A staple of Airberlin’s inflight menu, the airline serves its passengers more than 150,000 helpings of currywurst each year, with the dish a year-round favourite on the menu since its introduction in 2007.

Morning flyers will instead be offered the choice of a sweet currant bun or savoury pretzel stick instead of the usual free morning snacks, with beverages such as tea, coffee, juice and water available at the wee hours.

Australian passengers can earn either Qantas Frequent Flyer or Virgin Australia Velocity Frequent Flyer points on Airberlin flights, with the former also offering status credits on AB flight numbers, and the latter on VA codeshares.

As a Oneworld member airline, members of Airberlin's Topbonus scheme can also earn points when flying with Qantas, as well as Virgin Australia and also Etihad.

Further, Topbonus gives its elite members access into Qantas, Virgin Australia and Etihad lounges, which means Aussie travellers could earn points in one scheme with all three airlines.
