Two Australian eateries have been recognised in this year’s rankings of the World’s 50 Best Restaurants – and both of those come from the foodie haven of Victoria.
Melbourne’s Attica ascends the ranks to #32 – up from #33 last year – crowning it also The Best Restaurant in Australasia, serving up modern Australian cuisine by Head Chef Ben Shewry.
Brae restaurant in Birregurra, Victoria joins the top 50 for the very first time with an opening rank of 44 under chef and owner Dan Hunter, formerly chef de cuisine at Mugaritz in San Sebastian, Spain, which took out ninth spot in the same list.
Top honours went to Eleven Madison Park in New York City, cementing its position as The World’s Best Restaurant, and naturally by extension, The Best Restaurant in North America.
Housed in an art deco building overlooking the city’s Madison Park, the restaurant’s multi-course seasonal tasting menu celebrates New York’s rich history and culinary traditions.
Italy’s Osteria Francescana in Modena bumps to the silver medal spot but retains its title as The Best Restaurant in Europe, with the country’s Piazza Duomo, Le Calandre and Reale restaurants also make the top 50.
Closer to home, seven restaurants across Asia featured in this year’s line-up with Gaggan in Bangkok ascending to #7 as The Best Restaurant in Asia; Singapore’s Restaurant André climbing to #14 and Den in Tokyo making its debut at #45, after receiving the ‘Miele One To Watch Award’ last year.
Dinner by Heston Blumenthal in London now places at #36 in the world, with the chef himself – a regular guest on MasterChef Australia – further awarded the prestigious Diners Club Lifetime Achievement Award.
Ana Roš of Hiša Franko, Slovenia also took home the title of The World’s Best Female Chef 2017.
“All 50 restaurants represent the very best culinary experiences and talent,” said The World’s 50 Best Restaurants Group Editor William Drew.
“We congratulate each one, as well as all the individual award winners, on their remarkable achievements, innovation and creative passion.”

I have no clue why only two came from Australia, I thought maybe 5-6 but just shows how competitive these restaurants are.
