BlackBerry app of the week: Virgin Blue Check-Mate

While Qantas offers a mobile check-in service that's designed to work with all web-enabled smartphones, Virgin Blue has gone down the handset-specific app route. Its BlackBerry app is dubbed Virgin Blue Check-Mate.

You can book, manage and check-in for flights across the Virgin Blue airlines group, which includes Virgin Blue, Pacific Blue and Polynesian Blue.

The app has two stand-out features: the ability to purchase flights and pre-flight seat selection on the BlackBerry screen. Both features are impressively ahead of the curve for airline mobile apps.

If you're flying between Brisbane, Sydney or Melbourne, you can also get a mobile boarding pass that is scanned on your BlackBerry screen at the boarding gate. However, if travelling between other airports you'll still need to collect a printed boarding pass from a kiosk at the airport.

The Virgin Blue Check-Mate BlackBerry app is free and available from BlackBerry App World.
