My family and I traveling to New York 3/7 July, keen for hotel recommendations please, we are happy to share room, up to AUD500 per night. Good central location, is important as this is special family trip.
AUD500 generally gives you the pick of the bunch, especially if you are willing to share a room.
We got to New York for a week every year and we stay in the Affinia Shelburne (google search will find it) - we stay in a one bedroom deluxe (although they do have two bedrooms). The one bedroom deluxe has a sofa bed in the separate sitting room. Request a room near the top with a view of the Empire State. Also, you can't beat "wine hour".
You may find that it is not close enough to "the action" for your stay, however, Manhattan is big so you will probably be getting public transport or taxis anyway. It is five-ten minutes (walking) to Grand Central.
We have also stayed in the Embassy Suites in Times Square. It's nice with a free breakfast and two room set up again.
I would suggest 'the Mave' hotel in the Flatiron district as it's recently been taken over by new owners* and has been improved dramatically. I've also seen the W Hotel in mid-town go fro $197 USD per night with free breaky and internet if you are Visa Platinum.
As JI said AUD500 should get you a room at nearly any top hotel...all be it a standard or superior room.

2: The Ritz Carlton Central Park
*Both have an EXCELLENT location!
Now a common misconception is that the more 'iconic' hotels in New York are 'the best' is definately NOT true. Stay away from the Plaza and Waldorf-Astoria as this is filled with camera-happy guests who are loud and obnoxious and think they own the place (If you get the stereotype).
Also on my list for New York is the St Regis and the Park Hyatt
If these don't work out, might I suggest the staple hotels from InterContinental, Langham etc.
You are absolutely right about your choices. I always stay at the St Regis or the Ritz-Carlton, but if you can get me into either for AUD500, you will be my new best friend. I think $500 for those hotels may be somewhat ambitious even at parity, but certainly where the dollar is in the 70s.
Mate, the St Regis is outstanding. The top tier hotels all have their pros and cons but the St Regis has impeccable service and design and I love it because it is precisely the opposite of the Plaza and W-A, crowds don't hang out in the lobby. (In any event, I don't think the W-A is described by anyone as top tier anymore). The St Regis is one of those places that New Yorkers and business travellers love and recognise as one of the best but does not seem to have penetrated the mainstream consciousness, which is great.
Give the Park Hyatt a big miss. Great location, but it's a very expensive place to stay for the "minimalist design" and service that you will get at any half decent Hyatt at a third of the price. It doesn't feel flagship in any way
Stayed for a week once in the MPD at The Standard; AKA the hotel where Beyonce's sister & Jay-Z had a fight in the lift. FYI - the darkened lift with its eery video art is hypnotic. Definitely a wealth of rooms within this price range & amazing experience. A very different hotel in many respects. Close to 14th street subway/cross-town buses & walking distance to Bleeker. Its less than 100m from the Hudson.
It literally straddles the Highline on its pylons, a disused elevated freight railway line that cuts through the MPD & towards Lower Manhattan, now an amazing urban-renewed parkland that stetrches for kilometres.
Heaps of restaurants (the iconic Pastis) & a wealth of shopping (Dianne Von Furstenberg et al) are right on the doorstep.
I've only stayed in the LA Standard and not the NY Standard, but I'd describe it as... not necessarily a family-friendly atmosphere. Even aside from rappers having fights in lifts.
I tend to think there are better hotels to stay at if you have children.
We stayed in the Edison about 12 months ago, as per the name it is said that this was where the first phone call was received all those years ago. It is a quaint old world hotel, 20m off the top of Times Square where the ticket stalls for all the shows are available, and across the road from a Starbucks if you're into coffee. You would have to check with them about room sharing but we had a nice couple of days there. Not expensive.
NYC is not a cheap place to stay so $500 AUD will not get a room in the Ritzcalrton ,Pininsulla, Mandarin Oriental etc as they are more like $600USD+++ but there are plenty of other great options like;

Royalton Midtown
Mondrian in SoHo
I have stayed in the above places and really enjoyed the stays ,all worth checking out IMHO

Looking at booking a room but they appear to only allow three people to a room, we are 4, 2 x adults 1 x 18yo and 1 x 11 yo.
I like the Hotel, looks great, reviews good

PK, I think my wording didn't come across right. What I meant by 'saying that' was that regardless of the price, the best hotels are....
Haha, yes It would be good to get these 900/night for nearly half the price, and unfortunately I don't have any magic secret haha!
What is the St Regis like? As I said, it's on my list of future Hotels to stay at, it's opposite The Peninsula so great location.

I have friends that greatly recommend the Andaz (5th Avenue and also Wall Street) hotels in NYC. Worth a look.

NYC is not a cheap place to stay so $500 AUD will not get a room in the Ritzcalrton ,Pininsulla, Mandarin Oriental etc as they are more like $600USD+++ but there are plenty of other great options like;
