If you have status or a free lounge pass with Qantas I would go Jetstar International as you can access the international lounge

Hopefully the OP wants to go from outside of Australia to Melbourne.
If wanting to trave within Australia (esp SYD), some days you can use JQi from SYD - MEL, but usually only on a Wed.
Having travelled JQi shorthaul (domestic passenger on an international flight) SYD - MEL, and if cost is not a material consideration, I would fly QFi. I have flown QFi too in the past, as well as Jetconnect New Zealand to Australia.
Believe you me, QFi is much better than JQi.
