It's likely Qantas staff being overly cautious, but if you're willing to go against airline employee advice and risk a lost bag I guess that's your call.

Left my Q tag on the bag when checking in with Thai Airways.
When I arrived in Bangkok my bag was nowhere to be seen. Baggage services then informed me that it missed the flight due to ‘belt issues’?
Just wondering if the auto scanners got confused by reading both the Q tag & the Thai Airways tag simultaneously?

I doubt it- I actually have 2 Q tags on each of my checked baggage(mainly for ease of identification reasons) and I fly Thai 10-12 times a year internationally with no baggage issues.
