It fully and truly sux. Trying to search flight to Europe WAY in advance. Separate booking MEL-HKG by CX is available as well as flight from HKG to Europe. However if I try to book in one go I have "business" tickets where "your flight from MEL to LHR will be in Economy". It is not only inconvenient to book two separate flights it is also SIGNIFICANTLY more expensive from QFF points point of view so to say. I cannot express how much I have so called QF-EK "partnership" that leads QF to push all flights via DXB when plenty of award flights available via Asia.
Ah, few days ago I received invitation for survey "How much you satisfied with QFF program". Needless to say what my answers where.
Rant is over.

Have you tried calling Qantas to get help? Generally they can do bookings like what your after and if you ask nicely will waive the phone service fee.

i think henrus has a point. However, Serg i agree with you regarding availability on these rewards and routing. It won't be too far from enough where points are used mainly to buy gadgets rather than getting a free ticket. they will be more useful to "upgrade" from a fully priced economy ticket (it is already true now, but the future may be that you cannot get any upgrades from lower priced ticket at all or even free tickets). I think there are far too many people with plenty of qantas points to spend on and far too less tickets around for those points to be used on.

"Upgrade" is rubbish as well because you never know if it successful or not up until few days before flight. It is no drama to miss it if it business to first, but I do not like to buy economy ticket to Europe only to found that upgrade was unsuccessful night before flight.
