Hello Forum!

I have a question and hopefully am posting in the right section!

My cousin left for a 2 year working trip of a lifetime on Wednesday 24/5- she had only arrived and checked into her hotel in her first destination of Morocco on our Friday 26/5 and had been there for 30minutes when she received a harrowing phone call notifying her that her 14 year old brother had committed suicide that morning and for her to return home- so she boarded the next plane and understandably cut her trip short.

She has since resumed her journey and really needs this trip and distraction to heal now more than ever. Her travel insurance will only cover some of the costs to return home- but will not cover resumption of journey as they said that she cannot claim the same event.

The emotional loss is obviously devastating, but now the financial loss is also an unexpected harsh reality.

In your opinion, do you see a precedent or legal standing whereby she could claim some costs towards resumption of journey?

Anything that you can think of would be much appreciated, as well if anyone  has gone through something similar then please let me know.

Thanks
Donna

It's unfortunate, and an absolutely horrific situation, but I can see the Travel Insurer's point,

Either you're cutting the trip short, or you're not..

If you're just suspending it for a few days (albeit because of an horific situation) I'm not sure that's their problem... Best bet would have been to claim the lot back, and then start again... but I don't work in Travel Insurance, just the normal kind.

You'd need to check what is covered under the Product's PDS to get your answer.

Thanks everyone for your speedy response. I would think that not only would the return journey home be covered, but the resumption as well.

The pds has been well read but there is always a bit of ambiguity. I think that most travelers would resume their journey eventually- but this isn't covered. Has anyone had a similar claim or known of one?

Who's the insurer? Resumption of trip is usually only covered on "premium" plans. Basic insurance won't offer it.
