Is the only way to get QF code on your boarding pass if you are flying a codeshare is to book through qantas website or travel agent?

I have booked domestic AA flights and domestic india flights on 9W and i have been informed here on AusBT that 9W flights can accrue status credits if it has QF on the booking.
Is there a way to update these bookings?

Short answer, if it's codeshare you'll need to normally book on that airline, VIA QF.

However, with Jet Airways you can still claim points, even if it's not carrying a QF Flight Number. If you're lucky you might be able to list your QFF number through the Booking form, or manage my booking form... Worst case, wait until check in and you can slot it in there.

I have updated their booking with my QF number, but to get status credits, do you need to book it through Qantas website (is this what you are suggesting for next time?)

That is my understanding.

I've had a quick look at the QANTAS site as well, and it indicates: You can earn Status Credits on all eligible flights with Qantas^, Jetstar, Fiji Airways and oneworld® alliance partners. To maximise your rewards, look for the QF code when booking.

So you may earn them the way you have booked, but to guarantee them, Book through QF.

I would second the comment about booking directly with QF to get a QF flight number to earn max SC.

I had my first flight with LAN a while back, as it was cheaper booking with LAN's website than QF website.  I booked via LAN's website, putting in my QFF number.

It in the end resulted with me earning half the SC than if I had booked with QF, but the give and take is that, it was cheaper to book with LAN.

Earnt 10 QFF SC with LAN flight number.

Would have earnt 20 QFF SC with a QF flight number.

You can play around with the QF SC calculator on their website.

Edit: If you play around with the QFF SC earn calculator though, you will note that NO SC are earnt flying with a 9W flight number on ticket, even DEL - SIN!  In any class.

So even if going as far as putting your QFF number on ticket, this does not earn QFF SC.

So its best to chase up as much as possible, to get a QF flight booking, ie QF flight number, on ticket, or if not possible online, try QFF telephone sales, or be resigned just to earn miles ie QFF points but no QFF SC.

You can also book codeshares via 3rd party flight aggregators like Skyscanner etc so it's not restricted to only QF website. However, the bonus of the QF website is, it displays your potential SC and Points earn as you checkout. Also mindful if you're booking via 3rd party is the booking class for maximum SC earn rates. Best of luck!
