Happened to receive an email from American Express this morning say that the Express Path benefit at Sydney International Airport for Platinum card holders is expiring on 31 July 2017.

First I've heard of this, anyone have any further info?

It was always the case that it could expire on 31 July 2017 (unless they extended it - which they clearly haven't)

From the Amex Going Good website...

"Access to the Express Path Lane by eligible Card Members is available from the 20th January 2015 - 31st July 2017 and is subject to change or cancellation at any time."

Thanks, didn't realize that there had been an expiry date planned when the benefit was announced.

I think it's due to the initial contract with Sydney airport expiring. Initially, they even made the luggage trolleys free for amex card holders but I think that's ended as well. Amex could have pushed to renew the deal with Sydney airport but this could signal them pulling out completely and this may even include the Amex lounge.

Does anyone think there could be a chance of other loyalty groups, (a hotel chain's platinum members, Westpac/ANZ/NAB Black Card holders etc.) offering to fill the void left by American Express?

With the new RBA rules taking the spotlight of points earn via credit cards, I was kind of optimistically hoping one group may take the chance to add other benefits.

I doubt it. Amex gain the express pass entry, lounge space and even sponsoring the wifi and trolley hire was all apart of them pouring money into Sydney airport, something which I doubt any one else would be interested in.

Unless another large bank/chain was to do this again then I can't see the express lane benefit coming back to any form of credit card anytime soon.

Good point, that American Express could do it cause they were already invested in the airport. I've noticed HSBC are involved with a lot of airports? Macquarie Bank gives you free Hilton Gold status as long as you have their Hilton card.

I think you're right that the big two airlines probably wouldn't give up Platinum or Gold status, (as was rumored to be a benefit afforded to Centurion card holders), but I reckon there's an opportunity for banks/groups who are willing to think outside the square.

The Centurion Card comes with a free Qantas Club membership for accessing Qantas (and associated) lounges, and also provides free access to any Virgin Australia domestic lounge when travelling with Virgin Australia (the same perk as offered with the Platinum Charge Card).

I thought the Platinum card only offered Delta and Virgin Australia lounge memberships. If I knew it included lounge memberships with DL, VA and QF I'd feel a little bad about winging about the $1,200 annual fee.

The Qantas Club perk is only with the Centurion Card, not Platinum Charge. Apologies if this wasn't overly clear!

IIRC, you used to be able to get Cathay Pacific Marco Polo Club Gold status via the Platinum card (= Oneworld Sapphire = Qantas Gold) for Qantas lounge access, but this perk is no more.
