I fly to colombia every few years and wish there was a quicker way to get there. I read once that sydney to panama direct was on the cards with one airline, but can't find anymore information about this. does anyone know if it could happen?

Which airline would offer it and is there really that much of a demand? Certainly Qantas would never fly there.

In a word - no. Not in our lifetimes, anyway. Insufficient demand.

I think Santiago will remain Australia's only gateway to Latin America for a while longer.

In what world would this make any sense? Seattle, bogota, Mexico City, buenos aires, rio, São Paulo, Lima, Portland, Phoenix, Toronto, Chicago and Las Vegas would all be far more logical choices than a Central American capital 99% of Australians would not be able to locate on a map.

Perhaps you're confused with the announced, but not flown, EK operated DXB-Panama City. I'd presume that SYD-SCL-Panama City would be quicker than SYD-DXB-Panama City.

From 1964 to 1974 Qantas flew a 707 on th3 fiesta route: Sydney - Nadi - Papeete - Acapulco- Mexico city - Nassau (Bahamas) - Bermuda- London.

Anybody able to advise what loads were like? Given it lasted 10 years must have been good!
This would be a very interesting route if flown today, opening up central America and Carribean to the Pacific!

Panama is a hub for COPA, which is in star alliance, so unlikely Qantas will ever fly there, but it is the best connected city in the region but no O&D traffic. I just can’t see it ever happening. I would think Bogotá direct would actually be more likely, or Miami even moreso

Slightly off topic - Have used COPA twice in the last month to connect to Cuba and Colombia - what a dump of an airport and the most depressing flagship lounge I’ve ever seen. Looks like Panama airport is building a much needed new terminal though still couple years away. No wonder emirates has delayed starting.

Highly doubt we will see either of these ever happen.

Yeah I was just theorising. Both are much more likely than flights to Panama, but neither are even remotely likely.

Doubtful.

SYD-BOG can already be done as a 1-stop flying SYD-DFW-BOG (v.v.) on QF/AA or QF/LAN via SCL.

SYD-MIA can also be done as a 1-stop (using DFW, LAX or SFO as connect points).

A SYD-MIA nonstop would theoretically require the same aircraft capability that QF is talking up for the proposed SYD-JFK or SYD-LHR non-stops. This may be a possibility if all the ducks line up, but would still be 3-4 years off, at best.

Fascinating route. I found a link to this on airliners.net (though I can't seem to link to it :/)
