I searched return J fares on the Qantas website yesterday from PER-LHR on the 787 and was quoted AUD 13,202 for travel dates 22/6 to 7/7 this year. Given that this is not far off First fares for the one stop flights for this route (or even higher than QR is likely to cost in F when the A380 from PER starts in May), are these prices reflective of the general hysteria around this flight or are they a "premium" for the nonstop experience and reduced loads etc?

There’s a third option: are all airlines’ prices inflated at that time of year because of the school holidays? Have you checked whether other airlines’ prices are higher as well for those same dates, or is it just Qantas?

Unless the traffic from BNE, MEL, SYD to PER is also on the 787, paying that much for J is silly. QF will most likely keep the prices up until real loads dictate pricing. Once the fancy part is completed, QF will understand most eastern seaboard customers would prefer to fly through Singapore instead of Perth.

Two days ago, the J and F fares were much cheaper - the fares via SIN from the east coast were roughly the same price as the fares via PER. Not sure why they've suddenly leaped up for QF but i'd hazard a guess it's to do with double SC promotion.

I checked this pricing a few days ago for a trip in April. On the weekend I looked at, the Saturday outbound leg on QF9 alone was thousands of dollars more expensive than going via Singapore to meet QF1. But strangely, on the Sunday, it was thousands of dollars cheaper than via Singapore. Very odd pricing.

I'm interested to see what the preference will be for people from east coast - via PER or via SIN?

I noticed that PE was really cheap on this flight (like around $2500 return) for dates in September which is pretty good value (even though the seat doesn't have great reviews)

Members, any idea what the penalty is on SCs when flying Emirates to LHR from Melb or Sydney in lieu of Q

I have not experienced any penalty on SCs flying EK to Europe from Mel - the golden rule is to ensure you have a QF ticket with a QF flight number.

No penalty so long as you’re on a QF flight number. Ek will net you zero

Wow the $2500 PE would be well worth it. Just returned LAX-Mel front row of PE on the Dreamliner and We were happy enough with it. Qantas is trying an ottoman cube in that row which was pretty good. It's a long time since I flew anything but Business and my husband is 6'3. It's not Business but for the right price I thought it ok.

If we followed your logic we'd not stay in Sydney with views of the harbour for New Years because the hotels around that area gouge customers - so we should all stay in Liverpool...

could this fare differential be related to the current double SC promotion?
