Yes, I got the same. I do have a international flight to book - 15% off for First, sounded good, however the theory seemed not to match the reality.

Without logging in I got $34k for 2 x F, SYD to JFK - once I used my QF Plat login, the exact same flights (same day) came to $37.5k!! I was, however, expecting a discount (15% - around $29k total)

Must be a glitch, anyone else see the same thing?

I too looked at the offer this morning and found that on 5 x SYD - HNL - SYD there was no discount applied at all? Perhaps it is on selected routes only? very confusing.

Most airlines have the ability to track what prices they’ve already shown you & a slight increase in the prices can be deliberate to create a (potentially) false sense of urgency.

Maybe only applies to fully flex tickets and not cheaper fares thus being still more expensive (unless you need full flex)?

Also, the keyword is "upto" 20% off. This would mean very few fares are at that discount and the rest would be discounted from 0-20%.

Whenever these discounts are not applied to prices that are shown, i always assume, this is nothing more than a marketing ploy for quick bookings.

As usual it pays to read the T&Cs:

International (return flights only):

  • 15% off First (F, A)
  • 20% off Business (J, C, D)
  • 10% off Business (I)
  • 10% off Premium Economy (W,R,T)
  • 10% off Economy (excluding E)

Domestic:

  • 20% off all fares (excluding E)
Pricing is always hard to track so agree with earlier comment that test the pricing on one computer and then again for the discount on another when logged in.

Me too. I logged in three days back to check out Heathrow-Brisbane return flights and noted the fares. When I got the Qantas Platinum email I went back online - nope. No discount at all despite my flights fitting the T&Cs. I got all excited too ....

I just tried this - it's mad! Clicked through from the link they sent to one browser (not the usual one) and it was $5888. And then logged in as a platinum: $6393 for the same flights, same fare class.

$500 more to be a platinum. But the difference on the individual legs is even starker.

Why should I need to do this? they sent me an email stating that if I use my login I will get 15% off international return flights.

They have not provided this.

This appears to be no more than misleading and deceptive conduct.

My understanding was that you need to call to book these flights at a discount and that they’re not available online.

Sadly that's not right either. Qantas in the email itself states

Log in to access the fares

This is clearly nothing more than scam or incompetence. I have referred it to the ACCC.for them to enforce the misleading and deceptive conduct by qantas.

The terms actually outline there may be sale fares available that are cheaper than the discounted fare - seems a bit strange. Probably should’ve been more specific ie Discount on full flex or similar. Initially I was thinking this is a great way to reward loyal passengers, but seems like a waste of time...

Not so much a waste of time, more a matter of misleading and deceptive conduct. There are laws about this sort of thing.

Qantas did not limit the discount to certain fare classes, nor did they stipulate you needed to call (in fact they state that you need to log in to see the fares), nor did they advertise a range of fares (whilst the headline says "up to 20%" the fine print stipulates a fixed percentage for each fare type).

I will be interested to see just how much the ACCC fines them for this. I have reported it to the ACCC.
