Earn two Qantas frequent flyer points per dollar on movie tickets

Moviegoers can now earn two Qantas frequent flyer points for every dollar spent on movie tickets at Hoyts, Event Cinemas, BCC, Greater Union, Village Cinemas and a number of independent outlets.

Rather than paying for your ticket on the cinemas’ own websites or at the counter before the show, head to the Qantas Movies website and buy movie vouchers instead.

On arrival at your cinema of choice, head to the box office and present a printout of your voucher or present the voucher barcode on your smartphone screen, which can then be exchanged for a movie ticket.

Vouchers are valid for standard 2D sessions, while tickets to Vmax, 3D/Real D, Vpremium, Dolby Atmos and Xtremescreen screenings attract a variable 'upgrade fee' which will be payable directly to the cinema.

"Going to the movies has been rated by our Frequent Flyers as one of their top three interests," said Qantas Loyalty CEO Lesley Grant, adding that "this seemed like an ideal fit."

Note, however, that you’ll need to buy at least four vouchers at a time, but these are valid for five months from the date of purchase, can be shared with friends and family and multiple vouchers can be used on the one day: such as for you and a companion.

Hoyts vouchers also can't be used for movie sessions commencing from 5pm on Saturdays, although this restriction doesn't apply to the other chains.

You’ll also earn points only on the cost of the movie voucher itself: buying drinks, popcorn or choc-tops won’t also top up your frequent flyer account, but the points you do earn will normally appear within 48 hours.

As an added bonus, the cost of the vouchers will often be lower than the normal going rate for a movie ticket at the cinema, so you’ll not only be saving up to 40% but will collect two points per dollar at the same time.

And of course, using a points-earning Visa, MasterCard, American Express or Diners Club card to buy movie vouchers through Qantas Movies delivers a second serving of points.

For more information or to buy movie vouchers, head to the Qantas website.

This could earn me literally tens of points a year! (Unless I use one of the many ways of getting discount tickets like a sensible person.)

Seriously though, do frequent flyers go to see many movies? Or do we all just wait a few months and watch it on the IFE?

Of course there's some movies which you really gotta see on the big screen. Like Gravity, which was the last movie I saw at the cinema. Or Star Wars 7, which will be the next one.

I think frequent flyers are as likely as anybody else to go to the movies. For me it's more about the savings (full price tickets can be bloody expensive these days!), any points earned is a bonus, just like grocery shopping, filling the tank with fuel etc.

I'm not a fan of latest-release movies on IFE, the experience is typically less than immersive – I favour 'DIY IFE' with my own selection of shows on the laptop or iPad.

Did this mob used to be an airline?

I mean I totally get that Qantas Loyalty is the goose that loays the golden eggs and am therefore understanding of them getting the most airtime, but I recall the announcement of their Qantas Golf program.

I remember a few commenters saying that whilst they understood what was going on, it sounded a little like 'fiddling whilst Rome burnt'.
