Earning Air New Zealand Airpoints, status credits on Qantas flights

Air New Zealand's Airpoints members will be able to earn frequent flyer points on domestic Qantas flights as of October 28, 2018 – however, status points will not included in the codeshare deal.

The Qantas tie-up, which sees the Flying Kangaroo replace challenger Virgin Australia as Air New Zealand's partner on domestic flights, will see Airpoints will be earned at a flat rate across each of three fare codes provided the flight is ticketed under the Air New Zealand codeshare flight number (not the native QF number).

Those AirNZ ticketing classes for a Qantas flight are:

  • Business: C, D, Z, J
  • Economy/Flexi: Y, B, M, H
  • Discount Economy/Saver: Q, V, W, T, L

On a short leg such as Sydney-Melbourne, AirNZ frequent flyers will earn 10 Airpoints in business class, 5 Airpoints on a 'full economy' ticket and 3 Airpoints in discount economy.

Flying into Sydney on Air New Zealand for some meetings, taking a Qantas flight to Perth for more meetings and then perhaps heading back to Auckland on Air New Zealand's own daily Boeing 787 service will come with a tally of 52 Airpoints in business class, 18 Airpoints on a full economy ticket and 10 Airpoints in discount economy.

Air New Zealand has confirmed that even NZ-coded Qantas flights will earn zero status credits to help members climb the ladder to Silver, Gold or Elite tiers.

As previously reported, Airpoints Elite and Gold members booked on a codeshare flight with Qantas will also have access to Qantas Club lounges, although Koru lounge club members have been left out of the deal.

Obviously, Air NZ don't know their own system...

"Status Points are only earned on Star Alliance carrier operated flights."

but for some reason, you can also earn Status points on Cathay Pacific operated and Air New Zealand sold flights between NZ and Hong Kong and also the existing alliance covering Virgin Australia trans Tasman flights.

For NZ status holders they'll also lose any time Australian domestic lounge access, additional baggage and Priority Check-in, Baggage, Seating, and Boarding.

Hope Qantas don’t follow suit and not credit status credits on Air New Zealand operated flights. It is the Status Credits that make us fly with Qantas flight numbers.

We booked an AIR NZ flight BNE to Buenos Aires return in J class, back in 2017 and for health reasons have had to change to 24 March 2019. Prior 2/10/18, we would have earned Virgin Velocity points/status. Will be still earn these? Appreciate any advice. Cheers
