Emirates goes thrice daily with Spain flights from July

Emirates' connections to Spain will triple next month, as the airline adds a second daily flight to Madrid and adds a new route to Barcelona.

As the capital of the economically vital Catalonia region spanning France and Spain, business travellers heading for meetings or site visits in the region will find the Barcelona flights a timesaver over having to connect in a European hub.

For Spanish capital Madrid, a mid-afternoon Dubai departure and a late night return will add further scheduling options to your business trip.

Emirates will use Boeing 777-300ER aircraft on board all three Spain flights. Those are the same planes you'll find on most of Emirates' Australian flights, with the exception of the doubledecker A380 used on one Sydney flight.

At the very front of the 777 you'll find Emirates' first class suites, with angled lie-flat seats in a 2-3-2 business class layout in the middle.

We reviewed Emirates' 777 business class on the Sydney-Christchurch run recently, so take a look to see what you'll get.

Down the back, though, you'll find a very squashed 3-4-3 arrangement in economy. That's one seat more squeezed into every row than on most airlines' 777 economy class cabins, so traveller beware.

Timings and schedules

Current Madrid flight EK141 leaves Dubai at 0750, arriving in Madrid at 1345. Its return EK142 leaves Madrid at 1525, arriving in Dubai at 0040 the next day.

From 1 July, new Madrid flight EK143 will leave Dubai at 1425, arriving in Madrid at 2020. Return flight EK144 will leave Madrid at 2210 and arrive in Dubai at 0715 the next morning.

From 3 July, new Barcelona flight EK185 will leave Dubai at 0655 and arrive in Barcelona at 1200. EK186 will depart Barcelona at 1640 and land in Dubai at 0100 the following day.
