Etihad, SAS announce codeshare, frequent flyer partnership

Etihad Airways and SAS will begin codesharing flights under a new partnership to begin in January 2015, which will also encompass their respective Etihad Guest and EuroBonus frequent flyer schemes.

The codeshare agreement, which remains subject to regulatory approval, will see SAS place its SK code on Etihad Airways’ flights between Abu Dhabi and Brussels, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Rome, Milan, Zurich, Geneva and London Heathrow.

In turn, Etihad Airways will place its EY code on SAS-operated flights from these European destinations, excluding Brussels, onto SAS’ hubs in Copenhagen, Oslo, and Stockholm.

The EY code will also be placed on flights beyond Copenhagen to Billund and Ålesund; beyond Oslo to Ålesund, Kristiansand, Trondheim, and Stavanger; and beyond Stockholm to Umeå, Sundsvall, and Östersund.

“This codeshare agreement with SAS will improve flight connections to Stockholm, Oslo and Copenhagen, as well as a number of important secondary cities across Scandinavia" said Kevin Knight, Etihad Airways’ Chief Strategy Officer.

Tickets for the codeshare services will go on sale from Monday 8 December 2014 for travel from Monday 19 January 2015.

I don't get it, what's the point of the codeshare to BRU if they're not going to codeshare onwards from there?

I guess Etihad would rather channel its Scandinavia traffic through other points. It also enables SAS to channel Abu Dhabi traffic to / from its hubs over Brussels.

I should imagine that this is a precursor to EY starting operations into Scandinavia.
