Experience the golden era of travel once more with Pan Am

In a world filled with low-cost carriers, Knee Defenders and buy-on-board meals, the ‘golden era’ of travel has long been forgotten – except, as it would seem, in Los Angeles.

At the Air Hollywood studios, you can relive the true Pan Am hospitality experience in a mock-up Boeing 747 aircraft, served by stewardesses in original 1970’s Pan Am uniforms:

The journey starts with a cocktail hour and beverage service, where you’re free to explore and wander about the cabin.

After that pre-departure drink, passengers in the nose of the aircraft can unwind in a Pan Am ‘Sleeperette’ and watch movies on the big screen…

(We’d suggest aiming for row four – you’ll have an unobstructed view of the film, nobody in front of you to recline, and of course, easy access to the fixed champagne and scotch shelf for that sneaky top-up.)

… while on the the upper deck, pull up a seat in the lounge with your fellow travellers.

If your company doesn’t allow first class travel, there’s always Pan Am’s Clipper Class – the business class of its time:

Wherever you’re seated, the crew will then set your table in classic Pan Am style…

… with authentic china and glassware, the crew have been trained to give “careful attention to the exquisite service delivery of the era”.

Passengers will then dine on food typically found on Pan Am’s 1970’s-era inflight menus…

… which means there’s a mouth-watering dessert trolley to follow the main course.

After dinner, there’s a chance to take in a quick spot of literature…

… and when it’s time to depart, you’ll get a stickybeak at Air Hollywood’s film production sets – including mock-up aircraft cockpits and security screening points.

It’s US$297 per person for first class on the main deck or $267 on the upper deck, and $197 for Clipper Class.

This unique experience is booked out through to the end of this year, but bookings for Pan Am’s 2015 'flights' will open from November 14 – for more details, head to the Air Hollywood website.

I remember touring a Pan Am 747 at Sydney in the early 70s. The library up front was intriguing, complete with comfortable library chairs.

Looks retro, it's these moments that sometime make me feel I was born 10 years to late. Although I did read on CCN Business Traveller recently that back then domestice return airfares were the equivilent of $1,600 AUD.

Still, I can see the appeal of experiencing the retro 70's service again.
