Virgin Australia Velocity members can use their frequent flyer points to book first class and also ‘Suites Class’ travel aboard Singapore Airlines, but making that booking follows quite a different process to your typical reward flight.
That’s because you aren’t able to secure SQ first class or Suites Class directly via the Virgin Australia Velocity website, nor can you book the same via the Velocity Frequent Flyer call centre.
Instead, you’ll first need to convert your Velocity points into Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer miles, and then book your dream flight using those miles via the separate KrisFlyer frequent flyer scheme.
It works like this: for every 1.35 Velocity points that you convert to SQ, you’ll get an even 1.0 KrisFlyer miles in return.
(If you’re not already a member of SQ’s KrisFlyer scheme, make that your first step by joining for free online.)
Ready to shift your Velocity points over to the KrisFlyer program? Then check how many KrisFlyer miles you’ll need for your trip and calculate how many Velocity points are needed accordingly.
For example, a one-way first class/Suites Class journey from either Sydney or Melbourne to Singapore requires 63,750 KrisFlyer miles – so with a 1.35:1 conversion rate from Velocity, that translates into a precise 86,063 Velocity points.
(On other routes, you can simply take the number of KrisFlyer miles needed to book, multiply it by 1.35 and then round any decimal place up to the next whole number to work out how many Velocity points you’d need to transfer across.)
Once transferred, those points should appear in your KrisFlyer account instantaneously, which means you can quickly proceed with making your booking via the Singapore Airlines website (not the Virgin Australia Velocity website).
Be sure to select the ‘redeem flights’ option on the booking screen – rather than ‘book flights’ which requires actual money – and then enter your desired route, preferred travel date and select ‘First / Suites’ in the box below:
Your options will then appear on the next page. On the date we searched, a frequent flyer reward in Suites Class was available on flight SQ222 aboard the airline’s Airbus A380:
Don’t be fazed by the 75,000-point asking price, either: Singapore Airlines applies a 15% ‘discount’ to the number of miles needed for reward flights when the booking is made online, so just click on that flight and the discounted is reflected in the ‘booking summary’ area above:
Complete your booking by keying in your personal information, choosing your preferred seats and paying the associated taxes and surcharges, and then you’re done – a Singapore Airlines first class reward booking using your points from Velocity, but just funnelled via KrisFlyer.
