JW Marriott South Beach Singapore opens this week

The Marriott family has planted another flag in Singapore with the new JW Marriott South Beach.

It's the first JW Marriott for the island-state, which already counts a Marriott atop the Tang Plaza on downtown Orchard Road and the 'six-star' The Ritz-Carlton Millenia overlooking Marina Bay.

The location's hard to beat: soaring above 30 Beach Road the hotel is adjacent to the Suntec Convention Centre, Suntec City and mall, connected to the MRT Circle Line's Esplanade station, and just a block from Raffles City (and the iconic Raffles itself) and Chijmes.

Designed in collaboration with renowned French designer Philippe Starck, there are 634 rooms (including 47 suites) – each equipped with an Internet TV and entertainment system, superfast broadband, plenty of AC and USB sockets and a WiFi smartphone which can be used anywhere within within the hotel.

Marriott is also making a play for the female travellers with a "ladies' floor" where the rooms have additional amenities including a manicure and pedicure set, facial steamer, hair straightener and a 'boyfriend shirt'.

There are already five restaurants and bars, including Akira Back's modern Japanese and Korean restaurant to Tonic, a bar specialising in gin.

Four more food & beverage outlets will be opened in 2017, along with a day spa.

Until then, one of your best bets for R&R includes the Flow infinity pool and sky garden.

I realize this question is a bit off topic, but I'm going to ask anyway since the article makes reference.

What's the deal with the Ritz Carlton Millenia. It gets great reviews and this article refers to it as "6 star"

I haven't stayed there as it doesn't count toward my Marriott elite qualifying nights.

Can anyone tell me what makes it so special? Is it so much better then say the St Regis or Mandarin Oriental that a lover of luxury properties should put on their must stay list?
