Marriott brings five-star luxury to Melbourne Docklands precinct

Melbourne’s Docklands precinct will play home to the first new-build Australian Marriott hotel in almost 20 years with the five-star Marriott Melbourne Docklands property on the horizon for 2019.
Part of a $250 million development project and subject to planning approvals, the hotel will reside on Waterfront Way atop the existing Harbour Town shopping centre and Waterfront City, complete with a rooftop infinity pool plus bar and dining areas open to the public.
Roughly 200 rooms are earmarked for the Docklands hotel in addition to 260 residential apartments spanning 36 levels, which the company is building in partnership with Capital Alliance.
“The vibrant culinary scene and unique culture makes this property an ideal addition to our Australian portfolio of properties,” said Raj Menon, Marriott International CEO Asia Pacific (excl. Greater China).
“Australia will continue to be a vital part of our growth strategy and the Marriott brand will continue with further expansion in 2016,” he added.
Marriott Rewards members will be able to earn and redeem points at the hotel with all members receiving free in-room WiFi and Gold and Platinum Elite cardholders entitled to their usual perks including room upgrades, breakfast and free local calls.

Building a 5 star hotel on top of a discount shopping centre in the middle of nowhere. I can't think of any reason why this won't work.

Could have said the same for Hilton South Wharf but that has worked. Build it and they will come.

Hilton South Wharf is close to the convention centre which presumably accounts for a lot of its business, and it's also near the casino.
Harbour Town is a complete dead end.

Agreed - South Wharf is on the edge of the CBD and close to lots of things. Harbour Town is in a different suburb.

That part of Docklands is starting to take shape with majpr rennovations being undertaken at Harbour Town, along with more hotel projects slated for the area which already includes a Park Royal Hotel and Four Points by Sheraton property. Though I agree, right now its not suitable, but some 2019 (when the hotel opens), the area will be vastly changed.

Thats what they said about Docklands 15 years ago when they first planned it. It has never worked and never will.

Well, there's a Nando's. And a gelato shop. There's actually a decent coffee joint if you don't mind a fifteen-minute walk from Harbour Town. And then there's... uh...

At least Harbour Town is close to the freeway ramp and a fast escape to the airport.
Lots' of new hotels going up in this part of town, including the Ritz Carlton on Spencer Street (hardly a brand enhancing move there). Can't quite fathom why. Still, it points to an oversupply of rooms in the new few years and cheaper rates in Melbourne at least
As a self employed person, I am feeling the rising hotel prices. Sydney in particular has gone nuts. It's getting increasingly hard to get a good deal in Melbourne as well. Perhaps all the new builds down in Docklands will help push back the room rates a bit.
