Melbourne Airport's new UberX pick-zones (you'll pay for them)

Melbourne Airport is set to open dedicated UberX pick-up zones at its domestic and international terminals – but drivers will pay to use them, and pass that cost onto passengers.

The airport will levy an 'airport access charge' of $4 per trip, beginning tomorrow when the waiting and pick-up zones are officially opened.

If you're coming out of Terminal T1, T2 or T3, the UberX pick-up zone is Lane 1 of the main terminal forecourt – but only on the right kerbside.

Travellers at Terminal 4 will find their UberX pick-up zone at the Level 2 "transport hub'.

UberBlack pick up areas remain unchanged in the dedicated permit zones.

This will be interesting. Thinking about starting to use Uber to get to/from the airport.

I stopped using Uber from the airport a long time ago because you could only get Uber Black, which always seemed to cost a ridiculous $100+ just to get into the city, and the prices just keep going up and up.

or.....you could set your pick-up location outside of the airport and then call the driver and advise where you are...

Dean it seems you're a bit of a NUber when it comes to using UberX at Melbourne Airport 😉 Unfortunately they haven't been allowed to pickup in the airport arrivals area until now hence why only Uber Black is available. You just had to place your pin outside the airport then call your driver.

I went in a taxi 2 days ago asking to go to the Grand Hyatt...the taxi driver had no idea where the hotel was.  I am so glad UBER is available at the airport.  Melbourne has the worst taxis in the countet

They should have the same training as Cab drivers in London.

I use the GoCatch app which calls me a regular cab and using the app I can see if someone has 'caught' the booking and it shows them on the map as they travel to pick me up. These tend to be the better cab drivers because they have to sign up separately for GoCatch and it's a different fee structure. I've found that the poor ones tend to be international students who turned up on spec at the depot at changeover and picked up a gig because the regular driver didn't show for the shift, which is also why they may not have access to the credit card machine and/or GPS. I've never had one of those on GoCatch. Regular cab prices plus a GoCatch fee of a couple of bucks.  The drivers all have to prove they have police checks, insurance, licence, blah, blah to sign on with GoCatch.  I haven't picked up a cab using the app from the airport, but they tell me you book it to pick up from the hotel across the way (used to be the Hilton, can't remember what it is now ... the one immediately opposite the terminals and in the car park building) and they pick you up there. Won't use Uber.

I use Uber all the time a lot better than taxi drivers with no idea.

And you do not have to wait for them to find your correct change.
