Two more airport lounges will pull down the shutters this weekend, with American Express closing its exclusive Sydney and Melbourne international lounges from  Saturday 21 March.

An American Express spokesperson has confirmed the closures to Executive Traveller, which come at the same time as the worldwide closure of the upmarket AMEX Centurion lounges.

Melbourne's AMEX Lounge, and its Sydney sibling, will close on March 21.

"In light of the evolving health and safety precautions stemming from COVID-19, we are temporarily closing the American Express Airport lounges at both Sydney and Melbourne International Airports, starting on Saturday, 21 March, 2020," AMEX says, with no word on when either of the lounges are expected to re-open their doors.

Qantas will also close its international business and first class lounges at Sydney and Melbourne next week, when the airline suspends all overseas flying "until at least the end of May 2020", the airline says.

(On the domestic front, Qantas will close the Qantas Clubs and Chairman's Lounges in most capital cities, with the Qantas Business Lounge becoming the go-to for most passengers.)

For now, the best independent lounge options for international flyers departing from Sydney and Melbourne will be those airports' respective Plaza Premium Lounges – including the recently-opened Sydney space – and The House lounges.
