Melbourne Airport has opened the boom gates to its car park, with an unprecedented offer of free parking through until the end of June, 2020.
Under normal circumstances the airport rakes in $400,000 a day in parking fees, according to its annual report – but of course, these are far from normal circumstances.
As Melbourne Airport CEO Lyall Strambi puts it, "the only people who will be flying will be doing essential activities."
"They’re flying for a really good reason, whether it be research or medical professionals, or one of the other essential industries, that have to keep working. So we’re going to open up the booms and make the parking free because you know it’s right and a sensible contribution to try to do our part overall."
How to get free parking at Melbourne Airport
Head to Melbourne Airport's multi-storey At Terminal T123 parking lot – there's no need to book online, just drive right up.
Pull a ticket at the entry gate, and select a car park on level 1 or 2. Use the same ticket at the exit for zero cost parking.
If you happen to have an existing online booking between March 30 and June 30, you can cancel that booking and the airport will provide a full refund.
Make note of your email address & booking reference number, visit the airport's Find My Booking page and follow the prompts to cancel your booking. You can expect a refund to hit your payment card "within 5 – 10 working days", the airport says.
