Fancy a fully-stocked Boeing 747 drinks cart for your home or office?

Qantas is selling a thousand Boeing 747 bar carts (wine included)

Here's your chance to bring a little bit of Australian aviation history into your home or office, in the shape of a Qantas Boeing 747 drinks cart – and if you're thinking of turning it into a personal mini-bar, it comes fully stocked with 80 mini bottles of wine, plus Champagne from Qantas' business class cellar.

Qantas is about to sell a thousand of these Boing 747 galley carts, which its engineers rescued from the red-tailed jumbo jets before they were flown to California's infamous Mojave Desert 'boneyard'.

Can't you just see this in your home, office or 'man cave'?
Can't you just see this in your home, office or 'man cave'?

Each cart has clocked up around 2,000 flights and travelled estimated 15 million kilometres – to the likes of London, Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, Singapore, Tokyo and Hong Kong – so they're certainly not in mint condition. But that's just part of their unique character and part of the story they tell.

(Other items – including emergency exit signs, phone handsets used by the crew and a galley control unit – will go under the hammer at a charity auction at Qantas' Sydney domestic business lounge on Saturday October 10 ahead of a seven-hour Boeing 787 sightseeing flight.)

Phil Capps, Qantas Executive Manager of Product and Service, likes to think of them as "pre-loved" and ready to be adopted by "those with an appreciation for aviation collectables and an eye for design."

“There has been huge demand for Qantas 747 memorabilia, and frequent flyers have expressed keen interest to convert the bespoke inflight trolley into everything from lamp stands to storage units."

"The fact they come fully stocked with some of Qantas’ most popular on-board service items will hopefully inspire some high-flying fun at home.”

Each Qantas Boeing 747 bar cart has flown around 15 million kilometres.

Each Qantas Boeing 747 half-sized bar cart includes five plastic drawer inserts packed with:

  • 40 mini bottles (187ml) of Australian white wine
  • 40 mini bottles (187ml) of Australian red wine
  • one full-sized bottle of Champagne
  • one sleeve of Tim Tams
  • one sleeve of savoury biscuits
  • one 200g packet of smoked almonds
  • two Qantas business class amenity kits (featuring ASPAR Travel Essentials skincare products)
  • a 100% combed cotton Sheridan throw made exclusively for Qantas First Class
  • two pairs of Qantas Business Class pyjamas – one M/L and L/XL (if you want a smaller size, just give them a few washes in hot water)

The price for all that avgeek goodness is $974.70 – or 169,000 Qantas Points – which includes free delivery to metropolitan locations in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth.

There'll also be a small number of full-size carts, with double the included items, for $1,474.70 or 256,000 Qantas Points.

Would anyone really consider paying almost $1000 for a piece of aluminium and some miniature bottles?????

No way in the world I would but perhaps there are some die hard QF supporters who will!!!

Waste of money IMOP.

Emotional customers can be parted from their money quite easily. Look at the watch market.

Get the novelty of it..but it's not practical. It's not refrigerated so you can only use the top of the cart to house some liquor bottles. And its not much to look at...which is why they cover it with the white linen cloths in business. I'd rather go for the recycled airplane furniture which ET ran an article on not too long ago.

I've ordered a full sized, but actually maybe a half size would have been more practical.  Guess I might have to order that too...

How do they even have a 1,000 of these??? How many of these bar carts are there per 747?

Presumably they had multiple sets per plane, so they could turn planes around very quickly when they needed to. That would involve storing carts at several different airports.

They did once have a very big 747 fleet and the collection may span multiple generations of 747 aircraft if they used the same size carts.

In general airlines have an average of 3 cart sets per aircraft.

Thats what QF had when I worked in the catering centre about 15 years ago

Hopefully Qantas can use some of these funds to correctly pay JobKeeper payments that it has stolen and deliberately underpaid to thousands of employees.

Notice how in the 70's everything had a touch of class in keeping with the glamour of flying. The carts were dressed in wooden sides and fancy doors. Nowadays they are bashed and battered and rolled down the isle regardless. Of course in International F and J you don't see them and in dom J they are covered.
