Qantas' highest-flying travellers will be able to secure their top-tier frequent flyer status for life with the introduction of Qantas Lifetime Platinum in a raft of changes to the Qantas Frequent Flyer scheme.
But that lifetime of Platinum perks such as access to first class lounges won't come easy: Qantas has set the bar at a stratospheric 75,000 status credits earned across the life of your Qantas Frequent Flyer membership.
That's equivalent to almost 130 business class return trips between Sydney and London: over 6,000 bum-numbing hours in the air.
In other words, Qantas Lifetime Platinum will be hard-earned – as befits what the airline is positioning as "the ultimate recognition" for its most loyal passengers, who arguably spend more time in Qantas' airport lounges than their own lounge room.
Qantas will join the ranks of only a handful of airlines offering lifetime membership at their top-tier frequent flyer level, alongside Oneworld partners British Airways and Finnair.
More than just a Lifetime Platinum card
Eligible frequent flyers will be contacted by Qantas ahead of the September 2019 launch of the Lifetime Platinum status tier.
It's expected that the first wave of Lifetime Platinum card-holders will number in the hundreds rather than the thousands, with the Lifetime Platinum roster being even more exclusive than the invitation-only Chairman's Lounge.
However, the airline promises they'll get more than just a shiny new card for their travel wallet. Qantas Lifetime Platinum will come with perks, service and recognition above and beyond standard Qantas Platinum membership, rolled into a secret set of "unpublished benefits".
How to earn Qantas Lifetime Platinum status
To pocket a Qantas Lifetime Platinum card you'll need to ratchet up a total of 75,000 lifetime status credits throughout your Qantas Frequent Flyer membership.
It's not yet known if Double Status Credit promotions will count towards your Lifetime Platinum tally – Qantas has said it will release further details on the Lifetime Platinum proposition closer to the September 2019 launch date.
