Thai Airways restarts direct Melbourne-Bangkok flights

It’s another welcome sign as Thailand looks to rebuild its tourism-reliant economy.

Thai Airways restarts direct Melbourne-Bangkok flights

Thai Airways is giving travellers a new reason to smile, with direct flights from Melbourne to Bangkok resuming just in time for the country’s removal of pre-departure testing from April 1.

The Star Alliance member will roll out a mix of Airbus A350s and Boeing 777s equipped with fully-flat beds in Royal Silk business class on the non-stop service, which returns a little over two years after it was originally suspended in response to pandemic.

Tickets are now on sale, with four weekly flights from Melbourne's Tullamarine International Airport departing every Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Monday.

The 9½ hour journey jets off from Melbourne at 11am (10am when daylight savings ends) to reach Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi International Airport at 4:30pm. However, although well-timed for sunset drinks, travellers will still need to complete a PCR test on arrival and isolate on day 1 before they can explore.

Thai Airways will also offer four options on the return, with flights leaving every Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. Departing at 8:40am, the 8h50m flight will touch down in Melbourne at 8:30pm.

For its part, Qantas has listed March 27 for the recommencement of its daily Airbus A330 Sydney-Bangkok flights.

In line with Thailand’s Test & Go policy, visitors will still need to book a Government-approved ‘SHA Extra Plus Hotel’ (also known as SHA++ hotels) for their first day and night: costs start at around THB5,000 (AUD200) but can easily cost more depending on the standard of hotel you choose.

A USD$20,000 Covid insurance policy is also a condition of entry, in case you test positive. 

The next step in Thailand’s reopening will see the on-arrival PCR test downgraded to a rapid antigen test, with the Government proposing this to take effect from May 1.

Bangkok has long been a popular destination for Australians, as well as a gateway to exploring the rest of Thailand, with the return of additional international flights sure to be a jumpstart for the country’s tourism-reliant economy.

I wonder why the Bangkok stopover was replaced by Singapore back in 2012. Bangkok is certainly more fun as a stopover than Singapore and for business purposes, there has long been an over supply of Singapore flights.

Certainly a very positive development. Let's keep the reopening momentum going.

Just read in the Bangkok Post that Myanmar is considering opening up from January 2022 as well, with talk of travel (including overland access) being allowed initially from Thailand as part of a "neighboring country bubble" followed by Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam soon thereafter, and then probably other countries by the 2nd quarter.

Vietnam is also reopening, starting with Phu Quoc in November 2021, but under far more restrictive conditions than the Phuket sandbox in Thailand. However, after reopening other parts of the country between December and April 2022, Vietnam expects to fully reopen the entire country by June 2022. Cambodia is also about to reopen soon, including possibly establishing a border bubble with Thailand, permitting cross border travel between Trat province and Cambodia's Koh Kong before the end of the year. Finally, Bali and Singapore are slowly reopening too. That leaves only China, which hasn't announced any specific plans and continues with it's draconian zero Covid strategy.

Things are finally starting to look positive on the travel front, even in East Asia, after exactly 19 months of border closures.

Certainly prefer the flight leaving MEL at 10am which gets you into BKK at a very civilized time.

Thai First is fantastic, with superb First ground/lounge/transit  services  at BKK, but Thai Business on the A350 and B777 is just mah......Please bring back the 744 to Sydney, and the A380 to Sydney/intra-Asia eg HKG

It makes a lot of sense.The only reason I could think of why the Overnight on the way over worked so well is people connecting onto say Vietnam or Europe and want a civilised arrival time.
