Qantas releases new smartcards and bag tags

Top-tier frequent flyers will start receiving their new Qantas cards and bag tags this week, ahead of the November 10th opening of the airline’s Next Generation Check-in facility at Sydney domestic airport.

The redesigned cards contain a microchip to check in at the self-service kiosks, store your current booking details and double as a digital boarding pass instead of ye olde paper.

This is partnered with an electronic bag tag, aka the Q Bag Tag, which automatically links customers’ luggage with their flight details when they use the automated bag drop facilities located in Sydney and Perth domestic terminals.

The new design drops the Frequent Flyer branding, however – now it’s just called the Q Card.

Platinum, Gold and Silver Frequent Flyers as well as Qantas Club members will be first off the mark to get a kit containing their Q Card and Bag Tags, while “all eligible customers are scheduled to receive their kits by early 2011.”
