Now open: Mantra Hotel at Sydney Airport

Sydney Airport's new Mantra Hotel is now rolling out the welcome mat to travellers.

It's the third hotel within the formal airport precinct, and located at Ross Smith Avenue, near the T2/T3 domestic terminals.

This puts it a 15 minute stroll from an inbound domestic flight if you're travelling light and don't mind stretching your legs, although we suspect the majority of guests will opt for a taxi, Uber or shuttle bus.

Just note that the hotel doesn't provide a free shuttle bus service: it's contracted with Redy2GO for a $7 per person one-way ride between the Mantra and Sydney's domestic and international terminals.

The Mantra's 136 rooms will primarily host regional and interstate flyers arriving into Sydney to connect to an international flight the following morning.

These are all modern studio rooms in Standard and spacious King dimensions and they tick the boxes for a one-night stay.

The hotel picks up an 'aviation' theme through touches such as the artwork along the halls and above the beds.

Speaking of beds, you'll appreciate the handily AC and USB power sockets on either side of the bedframe...

... although their siblings behind the workdesk are literally behind the desk, not above it...

... so you'll have to haul the desk out before plugging in your laptop or tablet.

And while this may be a divisive decision, we liked the use of an open hanger rack for clothes rather than a wardobe which can make the room feel smaller and closed-in. After all, it's not as if you need a walk-in wardrobe for a one-night stay.

The breakfast is a straightforward buffet on par with most business class lounges and mid-range hotels: bacon, scrambled eggs, tomatoes, mushrooms, hash browns, fruit, yoghurt, bakery – you know the drill.

The restaurant makes a good showing for dinner, with a decent menu of quality dishes which don't skimp on the serving portions.

The Mantra Group is parent to the Mantra, Peppers and BreakFree hotel brands, and operates its own  Mantra+ loyalty program.

That is a crazy oversight with the desk power sockets!

Definitely a "somebody forgot to measure this up and think this through" moment, or maybe the various designers and contractors not talking to one another!

Maybe someone at ikea cut the desk legs at the wrong height...
