Fiji Airways plans to upgrade its Oneworld Connect partner status to full membership in the Oneworld alliance this year, with the airline confirming discussions around securing a proper seat at table are now underway with other Oneworld carriers.

Fiji Airways Managing Director and CEO Andre Viljoen tells Executive Traveller the airline has a “desire to become a full member to get access to the full benefits.”

“We already have substantial relationships such as codeshares with most of the four founding members of Oneworld so becoming a full member will take it to another level,” Viljoen adds.

The airline is expected to formally lodge its application in Q3 of this year, and, if accepted, it would become the alliance’s 15th full member, following the arrival of Oman Air by year’s end

Fiji Airways is the alliance’s first and indeed only Oneworld Connect partner – an alignment in place since 2018 that delivers limited benefits including priority boarding and check-in for its Tabua Club members and Oneworld equivalent status holders.

Among the alliance’s current ranks are Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Finnair, Iberia and Japan Airlines, together with Malaysia Airlines, Qatar Airways, Royal Air Maroc, Royal Jordanian and SriLankan Airlines.

Trips involving the Fiji flag carrier and one of its alliance sponsors – that’s British Airways, Cathay Pacific or Qantas – also unlock additional perks, including the ability to earn points and status credits, as well as access select lounges.

If granted a seat at the table, Fiji Airways would see a lofty boost in passengers benefits, including earn and burn of points across the full alliance network, plus boosted baggage allowance and significantly-expanded lounge entry.

Fiji Airways flies from Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Melbourne and Sydney to Nadi on its Airbus A350, A330 and Boeing 737 aircraft, with onward journeys to destinations including Los Angeles, San Francisco and Vancouver.

My first flight on Fiji Airways was great. It was a full plane, but everything went so seamlessly from take off to landing. A pleasure to ride.

Now THAT suddenly gives all those Qantas points some actual value ...   (assuming I can redeem some business class seats ...)
