Perth Airport opens new public viewing area

Perth Airport's new public viewing platform is now open, offering prime views of the main runway for what the airport tags as a 'near-runway experience' of arrivals and departures.

The purpose-built area has capacity for 100 people and has been designed to incorporate elements of aircraft history.

The shelter reflects the shape of the body section of a Boeing 747, and one section of paving is 120 feet long – the same distance as the first flight undertaken by the Wright brothers.

“The viewing platform has a magnificent view of the main runway, and is as close as the public could ever hope to get to watch an arrival or departure" says Perth Airport CEO Brad Geatches.

"The signage in place at the platform is educational, so that people can learn about the history of aviation and the airport while they watch the wide variety of aircraft that land at Perth Airport."

Due to the area’s proximity to the runway, ear plugs are available at the platform for those who wish to use them.

The viewing platform is open to the public daily between 6.30am and 7.00pm (October to March) and between 7.30am and 5.30pm (April to September) and is wheelchair-accessible, with free parking.

Visitors can reach the viewing area from Dunreath Drive (the link road connecting the International and Domestic Terminals) – watch for the signed entry point approximately half way along Dunreath Drive.

It should be noted that there may not be too many plane spotters who look as "sophisticated" as the lady in your picture.

I'd reckon most of the planespotters would be lined up looking at her! :P  (We'd have loved to run a pic of the viewing platform but Perth Airport says they don't have any - an odd thing for a PR Dept not to have on hand for a launch like this, but there you go, welcome to our world!)

I'll have to make sure I visit this place when I go to Perth next month! Sounds like an interesting spot for Aviation Geeks.
