Qantas adds 28 US cities to American Airlines codeshare flights

Qantas will make 28 new destinations available out of Dallas-Fort Worth when direct flights from Sydney to DFW begin on May 16th.

The codeshare arrangement with oneworld partner American Airlines will allow business travellers to book onwards journeys through Qantas to many US destinations, including Chicago, Houston, New York (Newark), Toronto and Vancouver.

(Of course, for Vancouver it would make more sense to fly into Los Angeles and then head due north rather than go halfway across the country to Texas and then double-back!)

Such arrangements are the prime reason why Qantas will abandon direct flights to San Francisco from May 14th, rerouting its long-range 747-400ER to Dallas-Fort Worth – which is home to and hub for American Airlines – and leaving Los Angeles as Qantas' west coast hub.

The new codeshare destinations will be progressively made available for sale over the next month.

Here's a list of all 54 cities now available for codeshare via American Airlines out of Dallas-Fort Worth (note that the Canadian and Mexican destinations are subject to regulatory approval, but this is usually a rubber-stamp exercise).

As mentioned above, it makes make more geographical sense  to connect to some of the cities via Los Angeles, and we've marked these cities with an asterisk:

Atlanta, Austin, Hartford, Nashville, Boston, Baltimore, Calgary*, Cleveland, Charlotte, Columbus, Chicago*, Cincinnati, Cancun*, Denver*, Des Moines, Detroit*, Newark, Fort Lauderdale, Guadalajara*, Grand Rapids, Houston (Bush Intercontinental and Hobby), Washington DC (Dulles and National, aka Reagan), Indianapolis, Jacksonville, Kansas City*, Las Vegas*, Lexington, Louisville, Memphis, Mexico City*, Miami, Milwaukee*, Madison*, Minneapolis*, Monterrey*, New Orleans, New York (La Guardia and Newark), Oklahoma City*, Omaha*, Orlando, Norfolk, Philadelphia, Phoenix*, Pittsburgh, Puerto Vallarta*, Raleigh/Durham, San Antonio, Saint Louis, Tampa, Tulsa, Toronto, Vancouver*.

For New York JFK and Miami, American operates some flights from LAX as "Flagship Service", with international-level First and Business class. So if you're flying in the pointy end of the plane to JFK or Miami, consider changing in LAX to avoid the lower level of "domestic first" class on flights to these two cities from Dallas.

You cannot fly non stop from lax to mci (Kansas city) so you will be better served using DFW.

Thanks for letting us know -- the specific logistics for MCI have obviously changed since the last time I visited my Aunt Ruth!
