Update: Qantas to axe direct Sydney - San Francisco flights from May 6

Qantas has brought forward the closure of its direct service between Sydney and San Francisco, with the last flight of QF73 now departing on Friday May 6.

The San Francisco service was previously slated to close on May 14, spurring speculation that the extra week off for the Boeing 747-400 and crew is part of Qantas' efforts to trim costs, as announced yesterday.

Direct flights from Sydney to Dallas/Fort Worth, which will replace the San Francisco service and use the same long-range 747-400, are still scheduled to commence on Monday May 16.

Qantas agents are in the process of contacting passengers currently booked on the direct QF73 flights to San Francisco in the week from May 7 to May 14 and offering the option to reroute via Los Angeles.
