Qantas cooking up flight cancellation offer for frequent flyers

IN BRIEF | Qantas will add a special post-disruption sweetener for members of its Qantas Frequernt Flyer program, alongside the existing raft of measures designed to placate stranded passengers.

This already includes free domestic or trans-Tasman flights to all its passengers affected by last weekend’s snap cancellation of all Qantas flights [see our story here for all the details] and reimbursing travellers caught up in the grounding "for all reasonable expenses".

In addition, under EU law Qantas must also provide a €600 (A$788) compensation payment to passengers stranded in Europe, as required under European ‘air passenger rights’ law.

But wait, there's more! Qantas has also promised that "further announcements will be made shortly in relation to the Qantas Frequent Flyer program."

Speculation has centred on the possibility of a double-points award period or double status credits bonuses, but the deal could also involve releasing a greater quantity of award seats for lower-than-usual number of points. Nobody knows for certain at the moment, but we'll bring you the good oil as soon as it's announced.
