Qantas Double Status Credits promotion is back, but for five days only

By David Flynn, August 9 2018

Got your eye on Gold, Platinum or even Platinum One frequent flyer status? Working to close the gap to Lifetime Silver or Lifetime Gold? Qantas is about to help you jumpstart that journey with another of its double status credits offers.

The flash promotion went live overnight and will run for just five days, through to next Tuesday August 14, but covers flights booked through to August 2019.

That's plenty of time to make the flights you need to get the status you deserve – and with it, perks such as lounge access, a higher checked luggage allowance, priority check-in and boarding, bonus Qantas points every time you fly, a better chance of scoring upgrades and plenty more besides.

For example, a return business class trip from Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane to Singapore or Hong Kong will get you at least 480 status credits (based on a discount fare) when booked under this promotion.

A business trip to Los Angeles will land you between 720 and 760 status credits, based on your fare type – enough to catapult your way straight to Qantas Gold status from a standing start.

Here's the rundown on how to score a double serve of status credits and pocket that shiny status card sooner.

You need to register: before you do anything else, you have to head to the Qantas Double Status Credits promotion web page and click the Register Now button at the foot of the page to ensure that your Qantas Frequent Flyer number is flagged for earning that double status serve.

However, our advice is to register after 10am EST today, August 8 – this corresponds to midnight GMT, and due to a quirk in the Qantas system, some frequent flyers who registered before 10am EST in previous promotions have had difficulty claiming their double status credits. So cool your heels and click later, not sooner.

Book your Qantas flights by 11.59pm EST, Tuesday August 14, 2018: this is the cut-off for this week's double status credits offer. The clock's ticking, so sit down and plan ahead. Read our guide to making the most of a Qantas 'double status credits' promotion for some expert advice on mapping out your strategy, which starts with setting your status goals.

Travel dates stretch from August 21, 2018 through to August 8, 2019: that's almost 12 months' worth of flying, making this a great time to look ahead and book business trips (and holidays). It's especially useful for trips which are based around fixed events such as conferences and expos, along with any quarterly visits to clients and overseas offices. Oh, and you don't have to book directly with Qantas – bookings made through travel agents and other online agents will also earn double status credits.

No changes allowed: as is par for the double status credit course, changing that booking – such as changing the date of travel or even shifting to a different flight on the same day – can negate the double status credits bonus. So once you lock down those future flights, if you're counting on those extra status credits your best approach is to consider them set in stone and make no changes to them.

Only Qantas-operated flights with a QF flight number are valid: you'll earn that double helping of status credits only on a Qantas jet carrying a QF flight number (both domestic and international flights are allowed). This includes QantasLink, but not Jetstar – and it rules out partners such as Emirates and Oneworld, even if your flight has a QF number, because the flight itself is not operated by Qantas.

Domestic and international Qantas flights qualify for double status credits: of course, it's those long overseas trips which turbocharge your ascent up the status ladder. But every flight counts, even those Sydney-Melbourne hops will nudge you forward at least 40 status credits each time.

No loyalty bonus: the bonus status credits earned from this promotion don't count towards the Loyalty Bonus awarded at every 500 status credits, nor will they trigger the Platinum Bonus Reward at 2,400 status credits or the Platinum One Bonus Rewards if you manage to hit 5,000 or 7,000 status credits. The standard status credits haul of your flights will count towards those, but not the 100% extra status credits earned during this promotion.

No status challenge shortcut: the terms & conditions also declare that bonus status credits won't count towards  "Status Accelerator/Challenge earn requirements". This is a reference to the otherwise little-talked-about Qantas Tier Accelerator, which sets the status match bar to a very low 200 status credits for Gold and 400 status credits for Platinum.

No Federal Government travel: in a new addition to Qantas' boilerplate terms & conditions for double status credits deals, the airline specifically notes "this offer is not available to you if you are travelling for Commonwealth purposes."

No travel vouchers: some savvy frequent flyers cottoned onto a trick of buying Qantas travel vouchers during a double status credits promotion, then using these to book a trip later in the year – with that trip earning extra status credits because the travel voucher 'inherited' the double status credits attribute when it was purchased. But as with Federal Government travel, the terms & conditions now declare that "flight gift vouchers purchased but not redeemed for an eligible flight booking during the promotion period will not earn double Qantas Points."

So you just booked a flight: should you cancel and rebook to earn double status credits? That will depend on the cancellation fees and the number of extra status credits you'll earn. Facing low or no cancellation fees on a business class fare from a Sydney-London trip, where you stand to earn upwards of 1,180 status credits during this promotion? Rebook!

Click here to register for this week's Qantas double status credits promotion.

Also important to note the following condition:

"If you change or cancel your initial qualifying booking and/or travel is completed outside the promotional period, this bonus offer will not apply."

If you change the flight after the 5 day window you may not receive the double SCs so you can’t book “placeholder” flights and then move then around later. In previous promotions I’ve done this just in case and have had some still credit but others not - it seems to be a bit inconsistently applied so you might still get the credits but don’t bank on it.

Hi Peteshep: that's a good note, I rather took it for granted but it bears calling out for those less familiar with a DSC booking, so I have added a par on that to the article.

Has anyone changed their flights booked during the february DSC promotion? I changed mine last year and the DSC still posted; have changed dates slightly for flights booked during the Feb promotion and am now slightly nervous ...

Hello David,

I’m not sure it’s correct to say that the dates should be considered to be ‘set in stone’. The current conditions state:

If you change or cancel your initial qualifying booking and/or travel is completed outside the promotional period, this bonus offer will not apply

In the last round of double status credits, the conditions were exactly the same.

If you change or cancel your initial qualifying booking and/or travel is completed outside the promotional period, this bonus offer will not apply.

In the last round, I rang QANTAS and they were quite clear: Changes can be made, so long as it’s the same booking reference and the flights fall within the prescribed period.

I will admit, the conditions are not very clear on this point -but the ability to make the change is given away by the ‘and/or’ rather than a straight ‘or’. At the end of the day, it might be best for people to check with QANTAS – but I have been able to change flights.

In a previous years double status credits promo i moved a flight a week back but still within the original promo dates and still got double credits for it. The current wording is the same as when i booked those flights a year or so back.

By 'considered set in stone' I mean from the traveller's perspective, not that of Qantas, because any change runs the risk of negating the DSC bonus. I know of some people who have changed a flight booking within the DSC travel period and still hoovered up the extra status credits, and others who have done the same thing and lost the bonus status credits, so it's a bit of a YMMV scenario: but the cornerstone is that Qantas' own T&Cs declare no changes allowed, and on that score alone I'd not chance it if I was counting on the extra status credits.

There doesn't appear to be the same AEST/GMT time zone issue this time - looks like Qantas learnt from the last couple of DSC promos as they changed the wording in their email:

"Simply register and book between 12.01am (AEST) 9 August "

So we are good to register before 10am. Should get screen based confirmation (get a screenshot for evidence) and email

Total posts 526

It's one thing to see what the email says. Previous promos in my experience have also said AEST or AEDT in the T&Cs. It's another question as to what the backend I.T. system does.

I wouldn't risk it. If it doesn't credit automatically you'll have to wait at least 6 weeks for it to be manually fixed and this could need to be done for each trip.

Both the body of the email and the T&C's at the bottom of the email state the same thing:

Simply register and book between 12.01am (AEST) 9 August

AND

This offer is valid when you register and make a new booking on an Eligible Flight between 12.01am (AEST) 9 August 2018

The splash ad on the QF website says the same:

https://www.qantas.com/fflyer/dyn/memberSpecials/double-status-credits-open-aug18?int_cam=au:en:homepage-promotion:qff-double-sc-august-20180809:en:flights

Therefore, I believe one of the learnings they got from the previous DSC promos is that they don't want the same issues happening through their Call Centres again - only a fool makes the same mistake twice. That would have cost them quite a bit of money in staff time.

There are also historical precedents that some members didn't need to wait the 6 weeks, after contact with QF Contact Centre there were manual posting of DSC's. Agree they were less prevalent than those that had to wait the full 6 weeks then get the DSC's applied.

Total posts 526

The promo has always said that it uses AEST as far as I can recall in the T&Cs but despite this QF's I.T. backend uses GMT. It remains to be seen whether this is still an issue for automatic crediting of DSC. We'll know soon enough once reports start coming in from those who have flown during the promo.

It's not the problem of whether you're eligible but rather the hassle in chasing up the DSCs and having to wait weeks for the DSCs to be credited delaying the time it'll take for QF's systems to recognise retained status or levelling up which can lead to missing out on status perks on a trip or two.

AEST or AEDT that is depending on the time of the year.
Qantas does honor the registrations and bookings made from 12.01am AEST onward but it's a painful process.

I had to email the printout of the actual registration, the booking made with the date stamps which luckily I saved during the booking made at 2am when the promotion kicked in, in February.

It was a lot of to & pro before I got the DSC, so if you can cool your heels for a few hours then it can save a lot of time and energy latter on.

If in doubt go to the QAN website and register to ensure you get the confirmation email. It takes all of 2 minutes and you can then book with confidence. In my case I received a promo email from QAN last night with an link to register, I click it this morning and got a message confirming I was registered. I took a screen shot including the URL for reference - surprisingly I didn't get an email. Now a few hours later and after reading this post I decided to 'register' again on QAN website, bingo extra page with prompt for email address, clicked submit and within 60 seconds I got an email confirming my registration. It's not to say that my first attempt didn't register, but I feel better having the email to confirm.

A couple of days ago, I received a targeted email offering 50% extra status points for flights to/from Queenstown. Now that this offer has been announced, which offer takes precedence. The booking period and flight periods overlap. How do I ensure that I get the double status points rather than the 50% offer

Qantas - Qantas Frequent Flyer

Presume that you opted to register for that promo. May depend on the T&C's of that offer. The T&C's for this DSC offer state:

"This offer cannot be used in conjunction with any other offer by Qantas. Only one double Status Credits offer can be used per individual qualifying segment of your itinerary. If you qualify for multiple bonus offers, the offer first registered for will be applied to each individual qualifying segment."

but in your case, the only qualifying segments for the 50% SC bonus are flights to/from Queenstown (ZQN). So any other sectors flown should qualify for the DSC.

Best to probably give the Qantas Contact Centre a call to clarify.

Have Qantas altered the way FF points and status credits are calculated on connecting flights recently?

I just pulled up fares for BNE-KTA via PER and it's showing 20SC for Red-e-deal and 40SC for Flex. These previously were 35SC for Red-e and 70SC for Flex. It seems that it has been calculated on the overall distance, or the booking system has left out the PER-KTA leg.

09 Aug 2018

Total posts 3

If you're looking up BNE-KTA on the calculator, it will assume you're taking a flight direct from BNE to KTA, and give you 20/40SC (Red-e/Flex) as that's the calculation based on distance.

If your actual flight path is BNE-PER-KTA (on two different flight numbers) then you need to look up each flight leg seperately - BNE-PER being 20/40SC, and PER-KTA being 15/30SC, giving you the 35/70SC you expect.

The calculator does not take into account connecting flights as it can't assume the path you're taking, it requires you to enter each segment separately.

Total posts 3

Sorry - realised you meant the booking system itself rather than the calculator. Can see what you mean when I try it myself! I'd hope/assume this is a bug in the way the booking system displays SCs?

Looks like the route I'd want to book isn't on special. I'll probably take my chances and see whether it goes on special during a DSC promo next year and if it doesn't then maybe drop down a status level and think about whether to level back up again later on.

Sitting on 480 currently, need 120 to retain gold by 31/08/2018. Bought flex ticks SYD-MEL (20 each way.) Counting on the double status and the 50 bonus to push me across the line to 600. Given flight is on 26/08/2018, do you think I will be safe? First flight to MEL will give me 20, so offer of 50 SC will come through. Then MEL-SYD will give me another 20. Then will get another 40 through form double SC, putting me at 610. Make sense?

05 May 2016

Total posts 526

You'll need to be quick to take the 50 SC before the end of August. Unlike the Double SC the loyalty bonus applies to the year in which it is taken.

Double SC if credited later will still count towards the year you flew. However if the DSC take the full six weeks to credit you would drop back to Silver until the DSC come in to correct this. Something to consider if you have flights from September to mid-October.

Note that DSC don't count towards loyalty bonuses anymore.

I spoke with the Qantas Platinum team and they clarified why I didn't receive an email when I first registered but did when I registered again (just to make sure). When I pressed the link via the email and registered no confirmation email was generated (yes always screenshot and I take a phone pics too). Qantas says this is accurate and how the system is to work. When I logged onto the Qantas website and registered again via the Double SCs link I was then directed to a page confirming my email and a registration confirmation email was received. Again Qantas says this is how the system is supposed to perform. It was obvious that Qantas call centre's were inundated with phone calls, staff working overtime to manage the response. Its a great offer and opportunity. Everyone loves getting the registration confirmation email but if you didn't now you know why.

Two questions, if anyone could help me that would be great!

1) Based in your experiences with previous double status offers, how long did it take for the bonus points to reflect on your status? Is there a delay?

2) I’ve booked a Qf J class sale fare from Dps > Mel > Syd for the end of the month. My understanding is it should net me 160 SC before the bonus (120 + 40). However when I made the booking (and to this day if you search a dummy booking for the same fare) it tells me that the booking will only net me 40 SC (presumably they’re only adding the domestic leg, and the DPS leg is not showing any earning).

I would assume this is an error? Or can anyone shed any light? My concern is they will automatically add the lesser amount of SC after my trip and will have to go through the long process of writing in to get the SC credited. This will get me to platinum, and I need it to reflect ASAP as I have another trip to follow.

Cheers everyone!

Hi Peterbus

1) SC and the bonus usually credited in your account just a few days after the flight if everything is straight forward as it happened to the last trip I booked in February. If there was an issue with the booking which happened to another trip, it took over 2 months to have the Bonus SC credited but it was back dated to when I took the flight so it pushed me over the line to Platium eventhough by the time it credited, I was already passed my renewal date.

2) Not sure what happened here but I suggest to check with Qantas about it. May be after the DSC period is over as they usually very busy at this time.

In my experience the double SCs can come right away or take up to 6-8 weeks. It helps to call Qantas if you are in a hurry to up your tier status. Not comforting but if your annual renewal date is later this year there is time.

Has anyone ever bought and used the QBE insurance policy offered by QAN when you book flights? They offer a cancellation policy for $12 when you buy the tix or an online quote from QAN website is $29 for a 1 day policy.... I'm thinking about using it then re-booking some flights I had purchased prior to the promotion. I can't find their PDS to see if there's an excess so not sure of conditions or economies of doing this.

PER-LHR- PER (with Milan BA J class return for about AU$50. What a bargain. ) $18K ( Bit tough finding the $18K a year out - note you can NOT use the "book now & pay later option" to take the double SC bonus!) 600 x 2 SC = 1200 Platinum locked in again :).
