Platinum One status in the Qantas Frequent Flyer program is only within reach of Australia’s most highly-travelled road warriors, but with comes with significant perks to make it worth your while.
Among them, a free Platinum card for your partner or significant other, no fees for extra-legroom seating in economy and same-day flight changes at no charge.
How to earn Qantas Platinum One status
You’ll need to notch up a whopping 3,600 status credits in a single membership year to earn or keep a Platinum One card, and at least 2,700 of those status credits need to have been earned on a Qantas QF flight number.
That includes, of course, bona fide Qantas flights, along with codeshares on its partner airlines such as Emirates, China Southern and Canada’s WestJet.
Status credits can also be collected on Oneworld airlines such as British Airways and Cathay Pacific, on selected Jetstar services and also on Fiji Airways, although these serve only as a top-up to your regular Qantas flying.
You’ll also need to take at least four Qantas, QantasLink or points-earning Jetstar flights each membership year to keep your status, although that’s hardly a challenge for a frequent flyer earning at least 2,700 status credits on Qantas flights alone.
A massive 180 return trips in discount economy between Sydney and Melbourne will land the 3,600 status credits needed for Platinum One, as would 45 return trips in business class.
It gets easier if your travel takes you far abroad – seven return Qantas business class trips to London will also do the trick, as would 15 returns to the likes of Singapore or Hong Kong at the pointy end on the Red Roo.
Lounge access for Qantas Platinum One members
Lounge access for Platinum One frequent flyers is much the same as for regular Platinum members.
That includes free use of domestic Qantas Clubs and business class lounges when flying with Qantas and Jetstar, in which you can bring two guests both before and after your flight.
When jetting overseas, your Platinum One card opens the doors to the superb Qantas First Lounges in Sydney and Melbourne, and to the new Qantas lounges in Hong Kong, Singapore and Los Angeles (pictured), whether flying with Qantas, a Oneworld airline or even Jetstar.
In the Singapore and Hong Kong lounges, which are 'integrated lounges' shared between business and first class travellers, Platinum One members enjoy a free shirt pressing and shoe shine service plus first shot at the showers – a handy perk if you’re arriving at the airport after a busy day at the office or on the road.
You’re also welcome to visit the business and first class lounges of all Oneworld airlines including British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Japan Airlines and more, plus most Emirates lounges whether travelling with Qantas or Emirates and the Fiji Airways Tabua Lounge in Nadi International Airport.
Although it won’t help with Emirates or Fiji Airways, Oneworld’s handy lounge finder points you in the right direction if you’re at an unfamiliar airport.
And if you’re in the Sydney CBD, feel free to stop by the Qantas MCA Lounge at the Museum of Contemporary Art for a quiet place to work or free coffee and snacks.
Qantas Platinum One: checked baggage allowance
Across the Oneworld alliance, Qantas Platinum One members can check one extra bag, or an additional 20kg, at no extra charge.
The allowances are slightly more generous when flying with Qantas and other selected airlines, as follows:
- Qantas domestic flights
- In economy: 2 x 32kg
- In business class: 3 x 32kg
- Qantas and Emirates international flights
- To North and South America (all classes): one extra checked bag, with 32kg allowed in each bag
- To all other destinations: an extra 20kg
- All flights: a second 8kg cabin bag (10kg allowed with a laptop)
- American Airlines and US Airways
- Three free checked bags (up to 23kg per piece), plus:
- Two free checked bags for travellers on the same booking as the Platinum One member
- British Airways
- One extra bag for the Platinum One member and any passenger also booked on the same reservation, plus:
- A weight allowance of 32kg per piece for the Platinum One member only
Members also receive two free electronic Q Bag Tags for use on Australian domestic flights, which replace the need for a traditional paper baggage tag.
More perks for Qantas Frequent Flyer Platinum One
As with Qantas Platinum, you’ll earn double points on Qantas, Jetstar, American Airlines and US Airways flights (including codeshares), and enjoy Oneworld Emerald benefits such as priority check-in, boarding and baggage handling across the Oneworld alliance.
Platinum Ones can also select any seat on any Qantas flight at no charge – including the front row of economy on domestic services; the exit rows on domestic and international flights; in the private, three-row mini-cabin at the front of business class on the A380; and even 1A down in first class.
Your partner will also be given free Platinum frequent flyer status. Like Platinum One, that also brings about Express Path cards with both Qantas and Emirates to shortcut the queues when you’re departing Australia or returning home.
That’s served atop free memberships to Qantas epiQure and the Qantas Golf Club, waived assisted booking fees when reserving a flight or redeeming frequent flyer points over the phone, and the ability to grab an earlier domestic flight at no charge on the day of departure – even if there would otherwise be a fare difference.
You’ll also be looked after by the Platinum One Special Service Team, which personally assists travellers during flight disruptions, when urgent assistance is required or when flights need to be changed or re-routed.
Finally, a cool 75,000 Qantas Points come your way after earning 5,000 status credits with Qantas and Jetstar in a single year, and a further 100,000 points after passing 7,000 status credits in the same time period.
That’s a considerable amount of travel – 7,000 status credits also gives you Lifetime Silver status and is half way to Lifetime Gold. Yes, in a single year.
Flight upgrades for Qantas Platinum One
Platinum One members are at the top of the pecking order when it comes to swapping your points for a better seat on-board.
On international flights, upgrade requests are approved up to seven days before departure and ahead of all other frequent flyers – including Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze cardholders.
Through their lounge access benefits, Platinum One travellers can also ask for an ‘on departure upgrade’ at the airport service desk, which is great way to reward yourself after a successful business meeting or when upgrades simply weren’t available online or over the phone.
If a family member is travelling with you on a separate booking – or even on their own – Platinum Ones can request points upgrades on their bookings which will be treated as though the Platinum One member were travelling themselves.
In short: Platinum One frequent flyers have the best chance at scoring an upgrade using their points than any other frequent flyers.
The unpublished Qantas Platinum One perks
Flight simulator sessions, tickets to a private tent at the Formula 1 Grand Prix and Qantas-branded leather iPad covers – just three of those ‘hidden’ perks given to selected Platinum One members.

Where Qantas flights can’t be booked with frequent flyer points, Platinum One members can dial the phone number on the back of their card to discuss the possibility – it’s by no means a sure thing, but it’s a good manoeuvre to have up your sleeve for a rainy day.
In the air, it’s common for the Customer Service Manager (CSM) or the Customer Service Supervisor (CSS) to drop by your seat to deliver a personal welcome as they hand over your Express Path card.
They’ll also occasionally bring your favourite drink, an amenity kit from business or first class or even noise-cancelling headphones for use with the inflight entertainment system, but as with all ‘unpublished benefits’, it’s certainly not to be expected on every flight.
And in the Qantas Singapore and Hong Kong lounges, you’ll find that priority showering and a free shoe shine aren’t the only perks to be enjoyed – so make sure you leave time to visit the bar...
