Qantas upgrades Sydney-Bali flights to Airbus A330

IN BRIEF | Qantas is giving its popular Sydney-Bali route a big boost in business class, with the daily Boeing 737 being bumped up to an Airbus A330 over summer.

The upgrade will run from 17 December 2018 to 29 January 2019, which is good news if you're travelling during those busy six weeks – especially if you've done what many Australian Business Traveller readers do, and convert Qantas frequent flyer points earned on business trips or through savvy use of credit cards into a points-based award seat.

Disappointingly, the A330-200 rostered onto the Sydney-Bali route appears to be one of the older jets with the Skybed business class pods in a 2-2-2 layout rather than the new Business Suite in a passenger-friendly 1-2-1 configuration.

That said, it's still a sight better than the domestic recliner of the Boeing 737 – and with 36 business class seats on this A330-200 versus 12 on the Boeing 737, that should make for greater availability of award seats.

Not ideal but so much better than the 737. The worst QANTAS flight of my life (due to a truly awful CSM) was on the 737 Denpasar to Sydney. The aircraft just added insult to injury.

I love this. Purely because if that aircraft is running to Bali then I won’t come across it any more on my trips to Bangkok.

Aircraft availability and/or how much the "Cashed Up" crowd are willing to pay a premium for the old "Angled-flat" business class year round.

Seeing there's not much A330s with the old product, the A330s are probably best sent elsewhere to one of the "business/premium" cities where the yields are a lot higher.

Bali is generally a low yielding tourist market.

Considering its a recliner a la premium economy international normally, this is one hell of an upgrade. Albeit GA still has a better offering. Either 2-2-2 fully flat forward facing or 1-2-1 in their new config. Yet on a 5-6 hour flight it is bearable for tge points and SC earnt.

Just 2 at the moment. Often seen on the Sydney to Beijing’s route. There keeps being noise that they will be refurb’d as well. But no date announced as of yet as far as I am awre

Only 2 left, hopefully none by early 2019.

Would Qantas just refurb or get rid of this dreaded aircraft once and for all. It just causes panic for anyone flying the Qantas A330 anywhere these days...akin to the Jaws movie music playing as you're walking down the aerobridge; 'have they subbed my plane" and seeing the old mk I seats in shock horror!

EBG and EBL still not refurbished? Now I’m starting to believe the Kangaroo is doing it on purpose just to annoy the passengers. Beijing, Manila, Hong Kong, Perth, Auckland, Singapore, Sydney, Jakarta, Shanghai, Melbourne, Bangkok and Brisbane... Just checked Flightradar24 and the twins seem to be everywhere spreading disappointment!

Yeah, I had that experience recently in HKG when EBG was swapped in as replacement. Lucky I noticed it early and was placed on the A380 service that got delayed to the next morning so scored another night in HKG. Cherry on top was the QF assigned me into F as compensation.

Perfect risk aversion strategy!


Btw, VH-EBL has been stationary in BNE since 08:11 AM, 2 October 2018 and VH-EBG has found its way back onto QF107/108 rotations.

Check your seat allocation: when we booked we were 1A & 1B on 737s SYD-DPS-SYD, then a few weeks later, with no notification (thanks Qantas) the older 332 with skybeds (2x2x2) in 2A & 2B, but now it seems we’re on a reconfigured 332 (1x2x1) on the return which put us in 2A & 2E (changed by me to 2E & 2F)

Booked Syd-bali last week to fly up and back 27/5-6/6 and yesterday received email to say that flight changed. We are now flying the A330-200as well which is great news. Sitting with wifey in 4e/4f and it is the 1-2-1 layout.
