SkyBus beams out free Wi-Fi on Melbourne Airport transfers

SkyBus passengers now enjoy free wireless Internet access when zipping between Southern Cross Station and Melbourne Airport.

Available from today on selected services between the two transport hubs, the facility will be rolled out across all SkyBus services by Wednesday evening, November 12.

That allows business travellers to remain connected to the office with full access to their email, or to continue working between a CBD meeting and their pit stop in the lounge.

However, wireless Internet isn't available aboard the smaller shuttles used for the SkyBus Hotel Transfer Service, on which you'll need to power up your portable hotspot to send those all-important emails.

“Wi-Fi is widely available across all forms of transport across Europe, North America and many parts of Asia,” said Michael Sewards, Director of SkyBus. “Our SkyBus passengers expect Wi-Fi so we are delivering it.”

SkyBus ferries around 10% of all visitors to Melbourne Airport – or three million passengers each year – across its 250 daily services.

Runing 24/7, travellers can either buy their tickets via the SkyBus website or before boarding the bus, with services running every 10-30 minutes between the airport and the city.

Frankly, I'd prefer a slightly cheaper fare or the ability to pay using American Express.

Free wifi for 20 minutes won't represent as much value to the majority of Skybus riders who would have 3G or 4G internet connectivity on their phones.

Hi Peter,

SkyBus did stop accepting AMEX and Diners a little while ago, but is now accepting the cards once more – both online and at the airport.

(Personally verified when I was in town a couple of weeks ago.)

Cheers,

-Chris
