Thai Airways A380 headed for Sydney in September 2013

Thai Airways will commence a daily Airbus A380 service between Sydney and Bangkok in September 16, 2013.

The airline, which takes delivery of the first of six superjumbos this week, had already listed Frankfurt, Tokyo, Paris and Osaka on the A380's official route map.

A spokesperson for Thai Airways confirmed to Australian Business Traveller said that Sydney had been chosen ahead of London as the route for the airline's fifth A380, although London remains on the cards for the sixth superjumbo.

Thai will run the A380 as TG476 out of Sydney, which will depart at 10am for arrival into Bangkok at 4.20pm.

It'll turn around to become the overnight TG475 service, leaving Bangkok at 7.20pm and reach Sydney at 7.20am.

Australian Business Traveller is at Airbus HQ in Toulouse, France, this week for the handover of Thai's first A380 and the delivery flight back to Bangkok.

That is another great bonus for Sydney and will give Thai some much needed additional capacity from Sydney.

Did not realise London was in primary contention for the A380 for Thai, and that it was always going to be deployed on Frankfurt Paris and Tokyo initially, and potentially London at later stages

Great news for SYD and TG. Thai have a great product and has been missed in SYD for a while ( since pulling out A346 and replacing with old 747's) .

Lets hope they increase there order of 6 A380s and bring them to melbourne. .. maybe a dream!

This is fantastic.

With Malaysian bringing the A380 into SYD from November and potentially China Southern this is quite a prestige offering.  I do hope SYD Terminal 1 is capable for this many A380's.

SYD T1 has 5 A380 capable gates so i guess timing of arrivals/departures of A380 flights may be 'adjusted'  if required!! OR additional gates will be converted (if that's possible)
