Malaysia Airlines reopens in-town check-in at Kuala Lumpur

Flying with Malaysia Airlines from Kuala Lumpur International Airport? You’ll be pleased to know the in-town check-in facility at KL Sentral station has reopened, allowing you to drop off your suitcase and even pick up your boarding pass before heading off to KLIA.

It’s super convenient if you’re planning some final sightseeing or shopping on your last day in Kuala Lumpur, and often a time-saving alternative to leaving your luggage at the hotel.

Bagged checked in at the railway station are sent ahead to KLIA and loaded onto your flight, making the last leg of your trip even easier.

After the in-town check-in desks were closed for years, Malaysia Airlines has now returned, with its counters staffed from 6:00am to 10:00pm daily.

Batik Air will follow from October 15, 2023, and “other airlines are expected to join later.”

Located in the heart of Kuala Lumpur’s Sentral railway station, the check-in facility is available only for passengers holding a ticket to the KLIA Ekspres or KLIA Transit airport trains.

Those tickets can be purchased at the station or via the KLIA Ekspres app, the later of which gives you a 10% discount on the standard RM55 (A$18) one-way fare or RM100 (A$33) return fare between the city and KLIA Terminal 1.

The Ekspres train makes that journey in a zippy 28 minutes, while a few extra stops for the Transit service stretches the trip to 36 minutes.

Travellers use their ticket to enter the check-in area at the KLIA Ekspres Departure Hall – watch for the relevant overhead signs amidst the station’s heavy visual clutter, and follow the green KLIA Ekspres Departures signage, as arriving passengers alight at the opposite end of the station.

Pop your bags into the baggage scanning machine before dropping them at the check-in counter, then enjoy the rest of your day in KL and perhaps a final platter of amazing satay before catching the train to KLIA.
