United's LAX luxe: tarmac transfers in a Mercedes-Benz

United Airlines has extended its luxury Mercedes-Benz tarmac transfer service to travellers at Los Angeles International Airport.

The time-saving transfer whisks well-heeled passengers with connecting flights directly between aircraft in a  Mercedes-Benz GL350 BlueTEC SUVs.

The service is available to passengers in United's Global First first class, along with members of the airline’s invitation-only Global Services program – the US carrier's equivalent of the Qantas Chairman’s Lounge.

Customers are met at the aircraft by United Airlines representatives before being escorted to a chauffeured Mercedes-Benz chariot, with priority given to travellers with tight connections.

Already on offer in the airline’s Chicago, Houston, Newark and San Francisco hubs, United plans to further expand the service throughout this year.

“We recognise that many of our customers value time above all else when traveling, and our tarmac transportation service demonstrates one of the thoughtful ways we can provide greater efficiency throughout their travels,” said Jimmy Samartzis, United’s Vice President of Customer Experience.

Earlier this year, United opened a new Global Services reception lobby for its VIP travellers in New York’s Newark Liberty international airport. A similar facility is planned for San Francisco in June.

Love to see Qantas operating a similar service, and beyond that extend the range of the P/J limo pick up/drop off in the LA area.

There are superfluous terms in United's product names. Too many "Global" and "First" appended to product names to the point that it sounds cynical and rediculous.

I just love how they've gone for an SUV.
