Why you shouldn't buy a MacBook Pro this week

Why you shouldn't buy a MacBook Pro this week

Got your sights on a new MacBook Pro laptop this week? No. No, no, no.

This is not the time to plonk down your cash or points-earning plastic for a new Apple laptop.

The reason? Next week sees Apple's annual Worldwide Developers Conference held in San Jose, with new 2017 models of the MacBook Pro and the more modest MacBook expected to take centre stage.

(Also tipped for the techfest's keynote in the wee hours of Tuesday morning: the super-sized 10.5-inch iPad Pro, a 'Siri smart speaker' to go up against Google Home and Amazon Echo, and possibly a new Apple TV, plus next-gen upgrades for MacOS 10.13 and iOS 11 – expect both an iPhone 7S and iPhone 8 to follow in September.)

Apple-watchers have noted that the company's online store is suddenly out of stock of the 15-inch MacBook Pro – a familiar pattern in the week prior to the launch of notable new Apple kit – and an upgrade to the 13-inch MacBook Pro is also on the cards.

Nothing radical, mind you – just faster processors in the form of Intel's latest 'Kaby lake' 7th-gen powerplants, which will combine added speed and improved graphics grunt with extended battery life.

However, if you were planning to waltz into an Apple Store in the next few days to grab a new MacBook Pro, this spec-bump has got to be sufficient reason to wait a week.

There's also speculation that the 13-inch MacBook Pro – the model without the 'touchbar' strip parked above the keyboard – could see a price cut to help bolster sales, while even the ultra-portable 12-inch MacBook and budget-minded 13-inch MacBook Air are said to be slated for a pick-me-up.
