Indeed, there is less choice to the US. But still much more than yesterday. 4 direct airlines and then a few indirect options over the pacific... Air NZ, Fiji, Hawaiian, Cathay. Or for those heading to the east coast of the US, via the middle east can be an option.

I thought the point was the false advertising, using such hooks as 'promotion' for 'premium companion sale'. 

What is a premium companion sale? I'm bet you 97% of Qantas staff wouldn't have a clue of its meaning. 

 

Sure they can charge what they like, but how about playing it straight, as said before, "it's for mugs and amateurs ".

Please explain the false advertsing? 

Having a "premium companion sale" does not mean you match your competitors prices... the sale is off QF's prices. Which are generally on the high side anyway.

The word 'premium' relates to the premium cabins (W, J, F). I got this off the QF agents website.
