I have found a tour company that uses fully restored locomotives, one for the 1920's and 1930's restored carriages for the heritage Melbourne Limited, and one for the magnificent Spirit of Progress with it's distinctive 1937 dark blue carriages. The restorations are just superb, it's such a shame they are not what are used for everyday Sydney - Melbourne train travel now. The soft furnishings, plush upholstery, the timber work and marquetry and solid brass fittings are relics of yesteryear rail travel and are just beautiful to admire and luxuriate in. Not sure if I can mention the name of the tour company running this tour, but how amazing it can still be done like many years ago. BTW, it's part of a very attractive package including a cruise to Sydney aboard some modern super ship, a tall ship sailing on Sydney Harbor, 2 nights Sydney CDB accommodation, transfers, most meals, then return by these two magnificent trains of yesteryear. 5 days away in total, departing 19th April 2017. This may be of interest to some who have time to travel for pleasure.
