Have already done an around the world on a Virgin Aus/Atlantic ticket (albeit a VS one). What Virgin Australia should be focusing on is improving their website + App, both are throwbacks from another era and are terrible. Literally takes weeks for points to be deposited and a number of the webs...

New Seat? They need to work on a new service level. IT IS TERRIBLE. Lovely attitude, carefree execution = unacceptable.

"...nothing available except for domestic connections" - really, you don't want to transit domestically to get a FF flight to the US? Not sure if I have a lot of sympathy for you.

Much better to go onto kayak.com and do a scan of best available fares as they often come up with cheap J seats at a comparable price. If you are parting with $5K you should be in full recline mode :)
