A local sim will most likely provide best bang for buck but then again the convenience of using your phone as soon as you arrive is a plus of a travel sim.
What is most important to you? Calls or Data?

I've used Three UK 'Feel at Home' a few times before. You get unlimited data & calls to UK mobiles (probably not much value) in quite a lot of countries, including Ireland & Sri Lanka. From memory it worked out to be about $50 a month. You can order the prepaid sim from third party website & have delivered to Australia....only issue I've come across is to recharge you need to have a UK issued credit card (or have a mate in the UK buy you a voucher over there & pass on the number).
