SFO transfer

I'm flying AirNZ from BNE-SFO in business, then connecting Virgin America SFO-ORD. Are there any smart gates like Dallas? I'm unsure if they codeshare with each other for thru check in (even though I have to pick up bags at SFO)

Whilst they don't codeshare with Virgin America, your bags will still be able to be tagged through to ORD. However, as you've said, you'll still have to collect at SFO and take to the baggage transfer desk. You will also be able to get your boarding passes through to ORD.

With regards to the smart gates, SFO does have the Automated Passport Control kiosks.

What is your understanding of the term "smart gates"? Just to make sure we're on the same page here...

Automated passport check for ESTA travellers.

They are available in LA and DFW for sure, but not sure about SFO
