Slightly off topic but I remember that Air NZ used to have a New Zealand credit card (can't remember) which bank, that allowed you to earn NZ status credits.
Initially, I think you could have earned all your status without flying but slowly they placed restrictions on it with on a fixed number of credits allowed to be earned by the card. They then closed the promotion a couple of years ago and now the only way to earn NZ credits is by flying.
Yes you can now earn VA or even EY status credits without flying but both come with restrictions and require spending into the thousands (at a particular store) to get anything worthwhile out of it.

In New Zealand all NZ credit cards provide you with the opportunity to earn Status credits.
