Hi all

first time poster looking for some tips please!
I am in brisbane and me and the mrs are planning a trip to London in june next year for my sisters wedding.  My that time we will have a 13 month old - bub is due next month.  We really wanted to fly business as we are fed up with economy and it would make life easier especially with the baby.
I had hoped to have enough velocity and SQ points to get business without paying for any flights but actually we will be  a long way off.  We have 270,000 velocity and 30,000 amex points (can transfer 1:1 to SQ or VA) currently.  Both of us will be Velocity gold by later this year.
I have yet to completely crunch the numbers but I think we have enough points to book 2 legs on SQ (both adults one way or one adult return) but not quite enough to book 3 legs.  I dont mind paying up to the cost of 2 return PE tickets but would prefer to keep cost down.  If paying for a flight it has to be VA partner so we can get status credits as my wifes gold membership will be close to renewal date.  I think we will have to pay cash for the child 10% of the full price ticket cost for the cabin we chose but I'm not completely sure.
It seems to be cheaper to get one of us both directions by redemption and pay full price for the other rather than getting 2 redemption tickets one way and 2 one way paid tickets for the return trip.  I also considered going out on SQ redemption tickets and coming back via hong kong with paid business virgin atlantic from london then paying for economy HK to MEL and upgrading with velocity points to business.  I think VA only flys HK to MEL and not directly to BNE.
Lots of variables to consider so if anyone has any smart suggestions I would really appreciate it.
thanks

Paying one full round trip fare will almost always be cheaper than two one way tix in my experience. One option that you might not have considered as its outside your alliance is using points for both to fly there and buying points for the return. AA for instance has bonuses that mean you could do this for probably 4K and fly back in J (both of you) with one world airlines.

Thanks that's a great idea. We don't have AA accounts but will sign up now so we can look at this when the next promotion comes up. It would be a shame not to earn any velocity status credits from the trip though as we don't have many other flights planned in the next 18 months
