Can I book reward seats for travel for my partner as a single ticket? I know I can book both of us together using 2 reward seats. But i will be travelling separately to her. I'd always thought this should be fine, but remember reading some different opinions here a while ago.
I don't understand your question. Whether your partner travel on the same itinerary as you or not, s/he will need a separate ticket. Each pax needs his/her own ticket whether it's award or revenue ticket.
If you mean whether you can book a separate award ticket for him/her, the answer is yes. You don't even need to travel. Some FFP programs such as Kriflyer and Asiamiles require you to add him/her as the nominated persons before you can redeem for him/her.

Not a problem to do with VA, however be aware that any status benefits (ie WP getting free economyX) aren’t valid if you’re not flying too on the same booking. Mrs B has come a cropper here previously.
